The Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Sajith Premadasa, states that it is the responsibility of all of us at this moment to strengthen the democracy we inherited from freedom.
Pointing out that it is important at this moment to remember the period we gained independence and the period our motherland went through after that, he recalls that at the time of independence, we as a country were at a very low level in terms of poverty, health, literacy and knowledge.
Issuing a congratulatory message on the occasion of the 77th National Independence Day, the Leader of the Opposition stated this.
The school system and university system were strengthened throughout the country through free education, and as a result, the literacy rate, which was 35 percent in 1948, has increased to 95 percent today. ThStrengthening the democracy we inherited from freedom is everyone’s responsibility – Sajith Premadasais is an achievement for us. Similarly, the fact that life expectancy, which was 45 years in 1948, has now exceeded 75 years is a victory for the health sector. It also states that through the agrarian development projects initiated to develop agriculture and giant development projects such as the accelerated Mahaweliya, we have been able to increase the paddy yield from 350 kilograms to 3,500 kilograms per hectare today.
A critical examination of the serious challenges facing the country today due to the narrow objectives of gaining power and the political myths that have undermined the achievements of the country will further give meaning to the freedom we have gained. It is the responsibility of all of us at this moment to strengthen the democracy we inherited after independence by providing new answers to old questions, not old answers. For that, let us resolve on this Independence Day to unite by reading the present correctly and overcoming narrow-minded communal and religious thoughts.

නිදහසින් අප උරුම කර ගත් ප්රජාතන්ත්රවාදය ශක්තිමත් කරලීම මේ මොහොතේ අප සැමගේ වගකීම බව විපක්ෂ නායක ගරු සජිත් ප්රේමදාස මහතා ප්රකාශ කරයි.
77 වැනි නිදහස් දිනය සමරන මේ මොහොතේ අප නිදහස දිනා ගැනීම හා ඉන් අනතුරුව අපගේ මාතෘභූමිය පසුකළ කාල පරිච්ඡේදය යළිත් සිහිපත් කිරීම මේ මොහොතේ වැදගත් බව පෙන්වාදෙන ඒ මහතා නිදහස ලබාගන්නා අවස්ථාවේ අප රටක් ලෙස දුප්පත්කමින්, සෞඛ්යය අතින් මෙන්ම සාක්ෂරතාව සහ දැනුම අතින් ඉතා පහළ මට්ටමක පසුවූ බවද සිහිපත් කරයි.

නිදහස් අධ්යාපනය ඔස්සේ රට පුරා පාසල් පද්ධතිය සහ විශ්වවිද්යාල පද්ධතිය ශක්තිමත් කෙරුණු අතර ඒ හේතුවෙන් 1948 වසරේ සියයට 35ක්ව පැවැති සාක්ෂරතාව අද වන විට සියයට 95 ක් දක්වා වර්ධනය වී තිබීම අප ලැබූ ජයග්රහණයක් වේ. එසේම 1948 දී අවුරුදු 45ක් වූ ආයු අපේක්ෂාව අද වන විට අවුරුදු 75 ඉක්මවා යාම සෞඛ්යය ක්ෂේත්රය ලැබූ ජයග්රහණයකි. එමෙන්ම කෘෂිකර්මාන්තය දියුණු කිරීම සඳහා ආරම්භ කළ ගොවිජනපද ව්යාපාර මෙන්ම කඩිනම් මහවැලිය වැනි යෝධ සංවර්ධන ව්යාපෘති මඟින් අද වන විට හෙක්ටයාර් එකකින් ලැබූ වී අස්වැන්න කිලෝ ග්රෑම් 350 සිට කිලෝ ග්රෑම් 3500 දක්වා වර්ධනය කර ගැනීමට අපට හැකිව තිබේ යැයිද එහි දැක්වේ.
බලය ලබාගැනීමේ පටු අරමුණු හේතුවෙන්, රට ලැබූ ජයග්රහණ යටපත් කළ දේශපාලන මිථ්යාවන් නිසා අද රට මුහුණපා ඇති බරපතළ අභියෝග විචාරශීලීව විමසා බැලීම අප ලැබූ නිදහස තවදුරටත් අර්ථවත් කිරීමට හේතු වනු ඇත. පැරණි ප්රශ්නවලට, පැරණි පිළිතුරු නොව අලුත් පිළිතුරු ලබාදෙමින් නිදහසින් පසු අප උරුම කර ගත් ප්රජාතන්ත්රවාදය ශක්තිමත් කරලීම මේ මොහොතේ අප සැමගේ වගකීමයි. ඒ සඳහා වර්තමානය නිවැරැදිව කියවා ගනිමින් වර්ගවාදී, ආගම්වාදී පටු චින්තන පරදවා ඒකරාශි වීමට මේ නිදහස් දිනයේ අධිෂ්ඨාන කර ගනිමු යැයි සඳහන් කරයි.
