Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa launched a new research unit yesterday (Jan. 15) to gather views from trade unions, civil society organizations, professionals and the general public to improve the quality of the opposition’s role in Parliament.
The Office of the Opposition Leader in Parliament has established a media and research unit affiliated with it and the public can be provided with information via the WhatsApp number 0759570570 and the email address connect@oloparliament.gov.lk, the Opposition Leader’s Office said.
The primary objective of the research unit is to obtain constructive information during the main debate and committee sessions when presenting the 2025 Budget Document this year, the Office said.
The Opposition Leader points out the importance of contributing to debates based on accurate information in Parliament and the importance of the participatory process in representative democracy.
Similarly, the Opposition Leader raises the point that the role of a populist opposition can be fulfilled by providing views of trade unions to parliamentary sessions, not limited to the budget debate.

මෙවර 2025 අය-වැය ලේඛනය ඉදිරිපත් කිරීමේදී ප්රධාන විවාදය සහ කාරක සභා අවස්ථාවේදී සාධනීය තොරතුරු ලබා ගැනීම පර්යේෂණ ඒකකයේ මූලික අරමුණ බව එම කාර්යාලය පවසයි.
පාර්ලිමේන්තුව තුළ නිවැරැදි තොරතුරු මත විවාදවලට දායක වීමේ වැදගත් බවත් නියෝජිත ප්රජාතන්ත්රවාදය තුළ සහභාගිත්ව ක්රියාවලිය වැදගත් බව ත් මේ පිළිබඳව විපක්ෂ නායකවරයා පෙන්වා දෙයි.
