Except for importing vehicles that are five to seven years old from the date of manufacture, the import of vehicles that are less than three years old will affect the cost of imports, says Jagath Ramanayake, Chairman of the Japan-Sri Lanka Business Council.
Speaking to the media, he said that the customs duty imposed by the government on them will remain the same whether they are new or used vehicles.
“It is more profitable to import vehicles that are less than three years old than to import vehicles that are less than seven years old. We, as a business council, pointed this out to the government. We believe that the government will consider this when easing the restrictions imposed on vehicle imports,” he said.
“In the first phase, the country should open up vehicle imports and observe its impact. We emphasized that if imports are restricted to vehicles that are less than three years old, only a few vehicles can be obtained at the Japanese auction. If that happens, competition will increase and auction prices in Japan will increase. To solve this problem, those vehicles should be considered for import if they are less than seven years old or at least five years old”
Jagath Ramanayake also provided the estimated import costs for several vehicles from Japan before reopening vehicle imports.
Toyota Corolla Cross: Rs. 5.5 million (including shipping charges)
Toyota Yaris: Rs. 2.7 million to Rs. 3 million
Toyota Yaris Cross: Rs. 5.5 million
Honda Vezel (new model): Rs. 6 million to Rs. 6.5 million
Suzuki Wagon R (new model): Rs. 3.5 million
The auction prices of these vehicles are expected to increase due to the increased demand for importing vehicles less than three years old from the date of manufacture.
Therefore, to avoid increasing import costs, it is best to import vehicles that are less than five to seven years old from the year of manufacture, he added.

“අවුරුදු හතට අඩු වාහන ගෙන්වනවාට වඩා අවුරුදු තුනකට අඩු වාහන නිෂ්පාදන වර්ෂයෙන් ආනයනය කිරීම වඩා ලාභදායකයි. අපි ව්‍යාපාරික සභාවක් ලෙස මේ බව රජයට පෙන්වාදුන්නා. වාහන ආනයනයට පනවා තිබූ සීමා ලිහිල් කරන විට රජය මේ පිළිබඳව සලකා බලනු ඇතැයි අපි විශ්වාස කරනවා.” ඔහු පැවසීය.
“පළමු අදියරේදී රට වාහන ආනයනය විවෘත කර එහි බලපෑම නිරීක්ෂණය කළ යුතුයි. වසර තුනකට අඩු වාහන සඳහා ආනයනය සීමා කළහොත් ජපන් වෙන්දේසියේදී වාහන කිහිපයක් පමණක් ලබාගත හැකි බව අපි අවධාරණය කළා. එය සිදුවුවහොත්, තරඟකාරිත්වය වැඩිවන අතර, ජපානයේ වෙන්දේසි මිල වැඩිවනු ඇති. මෙම ගැටළුව විසඳීම සඳහා ඒවා අවුරුදු හතට අඩු නම් හෝ අවම වශයෙන් අවුරුදු පහක් පැරණි නම් එම වාහන ආනයනයේදී සලකා බැලිය යුතුයි”
වාහන ආනයනය නැවත විවෘත කිරීමට පෙර ජපානයෙන් වාහන කිහිපයක් සඳහා ඇස්තමේන්තුගත ආනයන වියදම් ද ජගත් රාමනායක ලබාදුන්නේය.

එබැවින් වැඩිවන ආනයන වියදම් වළක්වා ගැනීම සඳහා නිෂ්පාදන වර්ෂයේ සිට වසර පහක් හෝ හතකට අඩු වාහන ආනයනය කිරීම වඩාත් සුදුසු බවද ඔහු වැඩිදුරටත් පැවසීය
