The Alcohol and Drug Information Center says that cigarette sales in the country have decreased by 50% in the past 10 years.
Accordingly, although about 4,800 million cigarettes were sold annually 10 years ago, only about 2,200 million cigarettes are sold annually, its Executive Director Sampath De Seram stated.
However, he stated that due to the tax policy being decided in a way that was beneficial to the tobacco company, the tobacco company’s profits have increased by 400% – 500%.
He also stated that about 100 billion rupees have been lost due to incorrect tax determination in the past 5-6 years.
Meanwhile, Sampath de Seram further stated that although there is a perception that cigarette tax accounts for 6% and alcohol tax for 9% of the total tax revenue, the salaries of government employees are paid using these taxes, this is false.

නමුත් දුම්කොළ සමාගමට වාසි ආකාරයෙන් බදු ප්රතිපත්තිය තීරණයවීම නිසා දුම්කොළ සමාගමේ ලාභය 400% – 500% ක ප්රමාණයකින් වැඩිවී ඇති බවද ඔහු ප්රකාශ කළා.
එමෙන්ම පසුගිය වසර 5, 6 ඇතුළත නිවැරදිව බදු තීරණය නොකිරීම තුළින් රුපියල් බිලියන 100 ක් පමණ අහිමිවූ බවද ඔහු සඳහන් කළා.
මේ අතර සමස්ත බදු ආදායමෙන් දුම්වැටි බද්ද 6% ක් හා මධ්යසාර බද්ද 9% ක් පමණ වන බවත් එම බදු උපයෝගී කර ගනිමින් රාජ්ය සේවකයන්ගේ වැටුප් ගෙවන බවට මතයක් තිබුණද එය අසත්ය බවයි සම්පත් ද සේරම් වැඩිදුරටත් ප්රකාශ කළේ.
