A new Special Crime Investigation Division is planned to be established at the provincial level to reduce crimes at the provincial level.
Nine police divisions, one for each province, are to be established under this and will be implemented based on the Colombo Crime Division.
Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala has stated that the responsibility of investigating serious crimes and conducting special investigations at the provincial level will be assigned to these police divisions.
He has stated that the cabinet paper for the establishment of these police divisions is expected to be presented next week.
All nine provincial police divisions will be under the supervision of a Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police.
The overall charge of the divisions will be vested in the Inspector General of Police.
These units will primarily focus on solving unsolved cases, combating organized crime, drug trafficking and other serious crimes.
They will also investigate certain crimes that may be more prevalent in some provinces, such as human trafficking.
Each division will also have its own hotline where the public can provide anonymous tips, the minister added.
The new unit will be operational from January.

බරපතළ අපරාධ විමර්ශනය කිරීම සහ පළාත් මට්ටමින් විශේෂ විමර්ශන පැවැත්වීමේ වගකීම මෙම පොලිස් කොට්ඨාස වෙත පැවරෙන බව මහජන ආරක්ෂක ඇමැති ආනන්ද විජේපාල සඳහන් කර තිබේ.
මෙම පොලිස් කොට්ඨාස ඇති කිරීම සඳහා වන කැබිනට් පත්රිකාව ඉදිරි සතියේදී ඉදිරිපත් කිරීමට බලාපොරොත්තු වන බව ඔහු සඳහන් කර ඇත.
පළාත් පොලිස් කොට්ඨාස නවයම ජ්යෙෂ්ඨ නියෝජ්ය පොලිස්පතිවරයකුගේ අධීක්ෂණය යටතේ පවතිනු ඇත.
කොට්ඨාසවල සමස්ත භාරය පොලිස්පතිවරයාට පැවරේ.
නොවිසඳුණු නඩු විසඳීම, සංවිධානාත්මක අපරාධ මැඬලීම, මත්ද්රව්ය ජාවාරම් සහ අනෙකුත් බරපතළ අපරාධ මැඬලීම සම්බන්ධයෙන් මෙම අංශ මූලික වශයෙන් අවධානය යොමු කරනු ඇත.
මිනිස් ජාවාරම් වැනි සමහර පළාත්වල වඩාත් බහුල විය හැකි ඇතැම් අපරාධ ගැනද ඔවුන් විමර්ශනය කරනු ඇත.
සෑම කොට්ඨාසයකටම තමන්ගේම ක්ෂණික ඇමතුම් අංකයක් ද ඇති අතර එහිදී ජනතාවට නිර්නාමික උපදෙස් ලබා දිය හැකි බව ඇමැතිවරයා වැඩිදුරටත් සඳහන් කර ඇත.
