Nine people, including a footballer, were arrested by the Angunakolapelessa police today (8th) for allegedly smuggling beef on a large scale, focusing on the Southern Province.
Those arrested include a player from Kompanyaveediya who played football between 2012 and 2016, and nine residents of Weeraketiya, Grandpass and several other areas.
A suspicious lorry and a cab were inspected by the police near the Angunakolapelessa Halekada checkpoint on the Southern Expressway.
1950 kilograms of beef worth about Rs. 4 million that was being transported illegally were found.
10 cows and two bulls had been slaughtered and loaded here, and the heads of the slaughtered animals were also found in the lorry.
The lorry had been equipped with a refrigerator to transport meat. Three people who were travelling in the lorry and the cabriolet were arrested by the police at the same time.
The location of the slaughterhouse was discovered by the Angunakolapelessa police following questioning of the arrested suspects. The slaughterhouse was located in a forest in the Buweliara area of Angunakolapelessa. 16 cows, bulls and calves that were ready to be slaughtered there were taken into police custody. The skins of the previously slaughtered cows were found buried near the slaughterhouse by the police.
Six suspects who were at the slaughterhouse have been arrested by the police, including a former football player, the police say.
Another small lorry used to transport meat was seized by the police while it was hidden in a house in the Weeraketiya Gonadeni area.

නීති විරෝධීව ප්රවාහනය කරමින් සිටි රුපියල් ලක්ෂ 40ක් පමණ වටිනාකමකින් යුතු හරක් මස් කිලෝග්රෑම් 1950ක් සොයාගෙන තිබිණි.
එළදෙනුන් 10ක් සහ එළ ගවයන් දෙදෙනකු ඝාතනය කර මෙහි පටවාගෙන ගොස් තිබී ඇති අතර ඝාතනය කළ සතුන්ගේ හිස් කොටස්ද ලොරි රථයේ තිබී ඇත.
ලොරි රථය මස් ප්රවාහනය කිරීම සඳහා ශීතකරන සහිතව සකස්කර තිබී ඇත. ලොරියේ සහ කැබ්රියේ ගමන් ගත් තිදෙනකු එම අවස්ථාවේදීම පොලිස් අත්අඩංගුවට ගෙන තිබිණි.
අත්අඩංගුවට ගත් සැකකරුවන්ගෙන් කළ ප්රශ්න කිරීම් හමුවේ ගව ඝාතකාගාරය තිබෙන ස්ථානය අගුණකොළපැලැස්ස පොලිසිය සොයාගෙන තිබිණි. අගුණකොළපැලැස්ස බූවැලිආර ප්රදේශයේ කැලයක් තුළ ගව ඝාතකාගාරය පවත්වාගෙන ගොස් තිබී ඇත. එහි ඝාතනය කිරීමට සූදානම් කර තිබූ එළ ගවයන්, එළදෙනුන් සහ පැටවුන් 16 ක් පොලිස් භාරයට ගෙන තිබිණි. මීට ඉහතදී ඝාතනය කළ ගවයන්ගේ හම් කොටස් ඝාතකාගාරය අසල වල දමා තිබියදී පොලිසිය සොයාගෙන තිබිණි.
ඝාතකාගාරයේ සිටි සැකකරුවන් හය දෙනකු පොලිස් අත්අඩංගුවට ගෙන ඇති අතර හිටපු පාපන්දු ක්රීඩකයකුද ඒ අතර සිටි බව පොලිසිය කියයි.
මස් ප්රවාහනය කිරීමට යොදාගත් තවත් කුඩා ප්රමාණයේ ලොරි රථයක් වීරකැටිය ගෝනදෙනිය ප්රදේශයේ නිවසක සඟවා තිබියදී පොලිස් අත්අඩංගුවට ගෙන තිබිණි.
