The government has no plans to cut public service but is focusing on increasing productivity, Public Administration Minister Professor Chandana Abeyratne has stated.
He has stated that although there are demands from various quarters to cut public service as an exercise to strengthen government revenue, cutting jobs will cause another crisis.
Therefore, he has stated that such measures will not be taken and these matters should be considered.
He has also stated that the government will take steps to increase the productivity of the public service.
He has also stated that productivity will be looked into when making future recruitments.
He pointed out that under various governments, graduates have been recruited as development officers on a temporary basis without paying attention to the productivity sector and that this will be corrected step by step.
Meanwhile, Duminda Hulangamuwa, a senior advisor to the president, says that Sri Lanka will not be able to sustain a large public sector and that the number of public servants should begin to be reduced soon.
However, earlier, Senior Presidential Advisor Duminda Hulangamuwa said that the public sector workforce will have to be reduced to 750,000 from the current 1.3 million employee base in the country.
“As we move forward, I can say that the funds available in the treasury will not be sufficient in the coming years. We cannot afford to have a large public sector. Therefore, we need to rationalize public services, cut numbers and move towards digitalization,” he said at the launch of the annual report of the Sri Lanka Association of Public Accountants held at the Bandaranaike Conference Hall in Hulangamuwa.
In addition, economist Talal Rafi said that the government spends Rs. 1,700 billion annually on salaries and pensions in the public service, which is the largest expenditure burden.
“If the public sector is reduced by 25 percent, it will save the government about Rs. 400 billion annually. That is equivalent to the cost of three Katunayake-Colombo expressways,” he said, making a note in X.

එබැවින් එවැනි ක්රියාමාර්ග නොගන්නා බවත් මෙම කරුණු පිළිබඳ සළකා බැලිය යුතු බවත් ඔහු සඳහන් කර ඇත.
රාජ්ය සේවයේ ඵලදායිතාව ඉහළ නැංවීමට රජය පියවර ගන්නා බව ද ඔහු පවසා ඇත.
එමෙන්ම ඉදිරි බඳවාගැනීම් සිදුකිරීමේදී ඵලදායිතාව පිළිබඳ සොයා බලන බව ද ඔහු සඳහන් කර තිබේ.
මීට පෙර විවිධ රජයන් යටතේ ඵලදායිතා අංශය කෙරෙහි අවධානයක් යොමු නොකර තාවකාලික ක්රමවේදයකට උපාධිධාරීන් සංවර්ධන නිලධාරීන් ලෙස බඳවාගෙන ඇති බවත් එය පියවරෙන් පියවර නිවැරදි කරන බවත් ඔහු පෙන්වා දී තිබේ.
මේ අතර, ශ්රී ලංකාවට විශාල රාජ්ය අංශයක් දැරීමට නොහැකි වනු ඇති අතර නුදුරේදීම රාජ්ය සේවක සංඛ්යාව අඩු කිරීම ආරම්භ කළ යුතු බව ජනාධිපතිවරයාගේ ජ්යෙෂ්ඨ උපදේශකයකු වන දුමින්ද හුලංගමුව පවසයි.
කෙසේවෙතත්, මීට පෙර, ජ්යෙෂ්ඨ ජනාධිපති උපදේශක දුමින්ද හුලංගමුව කියා සිටියේ රටේ දැනට සිටින මිලියන 1.3 සේවක පදනමේ සිට 750,000 දක්වා රාජ්ය අංශයේ ශ්රම බලකාය අඩු කිරීමට සිදුවනු ඇති බවයි.
“අපි ඉදිරියට යන විට, භාණ්ඩාගාරයේ තිබෙන අරමුදල් ඉදිරි වසරවලදී ප්රමාණවත් නොවන බව මට කියන්න පුළුවන්. විශාල රාජ්ය අංශයක් ඇතිකර ගැනීමට අපට හැකියාවක් නැහැ. ඒ නිසා අපි රාජ්ය සේවාවන් තාර්කික කර, සංඛ්යා කපා ඩිජිටල්කරණය කරා ගමන් කළ යුතුයි,” හුලංගමුව බණ්ඩාරනායක සම්මන්ත්රණ ශාලාවේ පැවති ශ්රී ලංකා රාජ්ය මූල්ය ගණකාධිකාරීවරුන්ගේ සංගමයේ වාර්ෂික වාර්තාව එළිදැක්වීමේ උළෙලේදී පැවසීය.
මීට අමතරව, ආර්ථික විද්යාඥයකු වන තලල් රාෆි පැවසුවේ රාජ්ය සේවයේ වැටුප් හා විශ්රාම වැටුප් වශයෙන් රජයට වසරකට රුපියල් බිලියන 1,700ක් වැය වන අතර එය විශාලතම වැය බර බවයි.
“රාජ්ය අංශය සියයට 25කින් අඩු කළොත් එමගින් රජයට වසරකට රුපියල් බිලියන 400ක් පමණ ඉතිරි වෙනවා. එය කටුනායක-කොළඹ අධිවේගී මාර්ග තුනක වියදමට සමානයි,” යනුවෙන් ඔහු X හි සටහනක් තබමින් පැවසීය.
