The controversial letter issued by the Matale Regional Director of Health Services advising specialists aged 60 and above to retire by December 31 has been withdrawn following protests by specialists.
A senior official representing the medical association has told the Daily Mirror that legal action will not be taken under contempt of court if such actions continue.
The letter further instructed heads of institutions in the district to be held accountable for any misconduct committed by specialists who continue to work beyond January 2025.
The move has caused widespread concern among the medical profession as it was against the Court of Appeal’s decision to extend the retirement age of specialists in government hospitals to 63 years.
This order created uncertainty due to the failure of the Ministry of Public Administration to issue an official circular acknowledging the court ruling.
This issue created a risk of over 200 medical specialists in Matale retiring.

රජයේ රෝහල්වල විශේෂඥ වෛද්යවරුන් විශ්රාම ගැන්වීමේ වයස අවුරුදු 63 දක්වා දීර්ඝ කළ අභියාචනාධිකරණ තීන්දුවට පටහැනි වූ බැවින්, මෙම පියවර වෛද්ය ක්ෂේත්රය අතර පුළුල් කනස්සල්ලක් ඇති කළේය.
මෙම නියෝගය හේතුවෙන් අවිනිශ්චිතතාවක් ඇති වූයේ අධිකරණ තීන්දුව පිළිගනිමින් නිල චක්රලේඛයක් නිකුත් කිරීමට රාජ්ය පරිපාලන අමාත්යාංශය අපොහොසත් වීම හේතුවෙනි.
