Under the “Empowerment Programme for Samurdhi and Aswesuma Beneficiary Communities – 2026,” a livelihood equipment distribution programme to empower Samurdhi and Aswesuma beneficiary families in the Wattala Divisional Secretariat division through micro-enterprises was held recently at the auditorium of the old Wattala Divisional Secretariat office.
Implemented by the Department of Samurdhi, 32 Aswesuma beneficiary families and 12 families receiving Samurdhi subsidies, identified among low-income earners for the year 2026, qualified for this programme. Accordingly, capital equipment was distributed to a total of 44 beneficiaries, with an expenditure of Rs. 5.7 million. Under Treasury allocations, equipment was granted at a rate of Rs. 150,000.00 for an Aswesuma beneficiary family and Rs. 75,000.00 for a Samurdhi beneficiary family.
During the event, I pointed out that the government correctly manages public tax funds and directs them to uplift the living standards of the people, and that our goal is to empower the community through micro-enterprises rather than merely offering subsidies. Therefore, I emphasized that beneficiaries bear the responsibility of utilizing the equipment properly. I also explained that those engaged in self-employment should place primary focus on enhancing the standards and quality of their products, which will enable them to conquer both local and international markets. I stated that the Vidatha Center network and service and support centers under the Ministry of Science and Technology are ready to provide the necessary knowledge to enhance the standards, quality, and value addition of rural small and medium-scale products, and urged them to constantly connect with these institutions to obtain the required support.
The event was attended by Wattala Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Brihan Abdeen, Vice Chairman Rohitha Seram, Wattala Divisional Secretary T. C. Rajika, Wattala Samurdhi Bank and Project Manager Indika Jayarathne, Samurdhi Headquarters Manager Lalnika Nandamali, along with Samurdhi bank managers, Samurdhi development officers, other government officials, and a large gathering of subsidy beneficiaries.
