The delay in issuing the new gazette to increase the minimum wage for private sector workers from Rs. 21,000 to Rs. 27,000 is due to the Attorney General’s Department delaying the preparation of amendments to the Budget Relief Allowances Act and the “National Minimum Wage” Act for Employees, Labour Minister Anil Jayantha told the National Labour Consultative Council, a spokesperson for the Free Trade Zones and Public Service Employees’ Union said.
The Minister said that due to this delay by the Attorney General’s Department, it has not been possible to increase the minimum wage in the private sector. This has created uncertainty regarding the increase in wages to Rs. 27,000, the spokesperson said.
He further said that since the Rs. 27,000 wage hike has not been gazetted, an increase in the minimum wage to Rs. 50,000 cannot be expected.
The Free Trade Zones and Public Service Employees Union says it is waiting for the revised gazette notification to be issued, and will decide on further action based on the salary increases according to professional levels.
The Cabinet has proposed to increase salaries in the private sector from Rs. 21,000 to Rs. 27,000 from April 2025 and from Rs. 30,000 from January 2026.
Meanwhile, in the last budget, the President has proposed to increase the minimum monthly salary in the public sector from Rs. 24,000 to Rs. 40,000.

අමාත්යවරයා පවසා ඇත්තේ, නීතිපති දෙපාර්තමේන්තුවේ මෙම ප්රමාදය හේතුවෙන් පෞද්ගලික අංශයේ අවම වැටුප ඉහළ දැමීමට නොහැකි වී ඇති බවයි. මේ නිසා රු. 27,000 දක්වා වැටුප් වැඩි කිරීම පිළිබඳ අවිනිශ්චිතභාවයක් ඇති වී තිබෙන බව ප්රකාශකයා පැවසීය.
ඔහු වැඩිදුරටත් පවසා ඇත්තේ, රු. 27,000 වැටුප් වැඩි කිරීම ගැසට් නොකළ තත්ත්වයක රු. 50,000 දක්වා අවම වැටුප වැඩි කිරීමක් බලාපොරොත්තු විය නොහැකි බවයි.
නිදහස් වෙළෙඳ කලාප සහ පොදු සේවා සේවක සංගමය පවසන්නේ, සංශෝධිත ගැසට් නිවේදනය නිකුත් වන තෙක් බලා සිටින බවත්, එහිදී වෘත්තීය මට්ටම්වලට අනුව වැටුප් වැඩිවීම් සිදුවන ආකාරය අනුව ඉදිරි ක්රියාමාර්ග තීරණය කරන බවත්ය.
කැබිනට් මණ්ඩලය විසින් 2025 අප්රේල් මාසයේ සිට රු. 21,000 සිට රු. 27,000 දක්වා සහ 2026 ජනවාරි මාසයේ සිට රු. 30,000 දක්වා පෞද්ගලික අංශයේ වැටුප් වැඩි කිරීමට යෝජනා කර තිබේ.
මේ අතර, පසුගිය අය-වැය මගින් ජනාධිපතිවරයා විසින් රාජ්ය අංශයේ අවම මාසික වැටුප රු. 24,000 සිට රු. 40,000 දක්වා ඉහළ දැමීමට යෝජනා කර ඇත.
