Foreign media reports that more than 100 children in the eastern Indian state of Bihar have fallen ill after finding a dead snake in their school lunch.
The Indian Human Rights Commission is conducting further investigations into this recent news.
The country’s National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a statement saying that it has been reported that the school chef removed the dead snake from the cooking pot and served it to the children in lunch.
The commission further stated that it is believed that about 500 children have taken the relevant meal.
More than a hundred of them have been hospitalized due to symptoms such as dizziness and vomiting.
After the children started falling ill one by one, it is said that the local residents have also started blocking roads and protests.
The NHRC has asked Bihar police to issue a report on the health status of children.
India runs the world’s largest ‘Free School Meals Scheme’ to provide better nutrition and educational progress to children.
It was first introduced in 1925 for children from poor families in South Chennai (Madras).
The scheme was introduced to curb hunger and increase school attendance, but there have been many complaints about the quality of the food.
In 2013, it was reported that ‘tainted food’ was the cause of the deaths of 23 school children in the state of Bihar.

පසුගියදා වාර්තා වූ මෙම පුවත සම්බන්ධයෙන් ඉන්දීය මානව හිමිකම් ආයතනය වැඩිදුර විමර්ශන කටයුතු සිදුකරමින් සිටින බව සඳහන්.
එරට ජාතික මානව හිමිකම් කොමිසම (NHRC) නිවේදනයක් නිකුත් කරමින් ප්රකාශ කර ඇත්තේ, මියගිය සර්පයාව ආහාර පිසින බඳුනෙන් ඉවත් කර පාසල් සූපවේදියා විසින් ළමුන්ට දිවා ආහාරය පිළිගන්වා ඇති බවට තොරතුරු වාර්තා වී ඇති බවයි.
වැඩිදුරටත් අදහස් දක්වමින් එම කොමිසම සඳහන් කරන්නේ ළමුන් 500 ක් පමණ අදාළ ආහාර වේල ලබාගෙන ඇති බවට ද විශ්වාස කරන බවයි.
ඉන් ළමුන් සියයකට වැඩි පිරිසක් කරකැවිල්ල සහ වමනය වැනි රෝග ලක්ෂණ හේතුවෙන් රෝහල්ගත කර තිබෙනවා.
එලෙස දරුවන් එකිනෙකා අසනීප වීමට පටන් ගත් පසු, ප්රදේශවාසීන් මාර්ග අවහිර කරමින් විරෝධතාවන් ද ආරම්භ කර ඇති බව සඳහන්.
මේ පිළිබඳව දරුවන්ගේ සෞඛ්ය තත්ත්වය පිළිබඳ යාවත්කාලීන කරමින්, වාර්තාවක් නිකුත් කරන ලෙසයි NHRC මගින් බිහාර් හි පොලිසියට දැනුම්දී ඇත්තේ.
වඩා හොඳ පෝෂණයක් ලබාදීම සහ දරුවන්ගේ අධ්යාපන ප්රගතිය උදෙසා ඉන්දියාව මගින් ලොව විශාලතම ‘නොමිලේ පාසල් ආහාර සැපයීමේ යෝජනා ක්රමය’ ක්රියාත්මක කරනු ලබයි.
1925 දී එය මුලින්ම හඳුන්වා දෙන ලද්දේ දකුණු චෙන්නායි හි (මදුරාසි) දුප්පත් පවුල් පසුබිම්වල දරුවන් සඳහායි.
මෙම ක්රමය කුසගින්න මැඩපැවැත්වීම සහ පාසල් පැමිණීම වැඩි කිරීම සඳහා හඳුන්වාදුන් නමුත්, ආහාරවල ප්රමිතිය පිළිබඳ පැමිණිලි රැසකි.
2013 වසරේදී ද බිහාර් ප්රාන්තයේ පාසල් දරුවන් 23 දෙනෙකුගේ මරණ සඳහා ‘දූෂිත ආහාර’ හේතු වූ බවට තොරතුරු වාර්තා විය.
