Coral reefs have begun to grow in the sea near Hambantota port, and they are currently being nurtured and studied through a research project, the Chinese company that operates the port says.
The port administration points out that the environmentally friendly policy of a ‘green port’ has provided a sanctuary for the natural growth of various coral reef species along the port’s breakwaters and on the artificial island.
The dry land for the port was excavated and then filled with seawater. The artificial island was built from excavated materials.
“This project starts with the ecosystem nurtured by the Hambantota International Port. Several thriving coral reefs have grown within the port’s breakwater and basin. Recently, we decided that simply nurturing this natural growth was not enough. Therefore, we also needed to investigate this phenomenon scientifically,” said Wilson Ku, CEO of the Hambantota International Port Group, in a statement.
The Green Port concept strikes a balance between industrial activities and environmental conservation while minimizing the environmental impacts of the port.
Under the Coral Reef Protection Project, the Sri Lanka Maritime University will conduct an extensive baseline study to assess coral cover, species diversity and the presence of various marine organisms such as fish, invertebrates and algae.
Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Fisheries and Oceanography, Sri Lanka Maritime University, M.F.M. Fayrouz has said that he will conduct research and lead monitoring efforts in this regard over the next five months.

වරාය වෙනුවෙන් වියළි භූමිය හාරා පසුව මුහුදු ජලයෙන් පුරවා ඇත. කෘත්රිම දූපත ගොඩනඟා ඇත්තේ කැණීම් කරන ලද ද්රව්යවලිනි.
“මෙම ව්යාපෘතිය ආරම්භ වන්නේ හම්බන්තොට අන්තර්ජාතික වරායෙන් පෝෂණය වන පරිසර පද්ධතියෙන්. වරායේ දියකඩනය සහ ද්රෝණිය තුළ සශ්රීක කොරල්පර කිහිපයක් වර්ධනය වී තිබෙනවා. මෑතකදී, අපි තීරණය කළා මෙම ස්වාභාවික වර්ධනය සරලව පෝෂණය කිරීම පමණක් ප්රමාණවත් නොවන බව. එබැවින් මෙම සංසිද්ධිය විද්යාත්මකව විමර්ශනය කිරීමටද අවශ්යයයි” හම්බන්තොට අන්තර්ජාතික වරාය සමූහයේ ප්රධාන විධායක විල්සන් කු නිවේදනයක් නිකුත් කරමින් පවසයි.
හරිත වරාය සංකල්පය කාර්මික ක්රියාකාරකම් සහ පාරිසරික සංරක්ෂණය අතර සමතුලිතතාවයක් ඇති කරන අතරම වරායේ පාරිසරික බලපෑම් අවම කරයි.
කොරල්පර ආරක්ෂණ ව්යාපෘතිය යටතේ, ශ්රී ලංකා සාගර විශ්ව විද්යාලය විසින් කොරල් ආවරණය, විශේෂ විවිධත්වය සහ මත්ස්යයන්, අපෘෂ්ඨවංශීන් සහ ඇල්ගී වැනි විවිධ සාගර ජීවීන්ගේ පැවැත්ම තක්සේරු කිරීම සඳහා පුළුල් මූලික අධ්යයනයක් සිදුකරනු ඇත.
