Sabaragamuwa Maha Saman Temple’s governing authority and Kapumahatun have withdrawn from daily teawa and other duties in protest against the appointment of an acting Basnayake Nilame in violation of Sabaragamuwa Maha Saman Temple’s traditions.
With the expiration of the term of the former Basnayake Nilame, the Commissioner General of Buddhist Affairs appointed S.V. Chandrasinghe as the acting Basnayake Nilame last week to serve until a permanent Basnayake Nilame is appointed.
The group that resigned yesterday said that this appointment, which is not in line with the traditional customs of the Sabaragamuwa Maha Saman Devalaya, was made for political reasons.
Yesterday morning, the Chief Kapu and other Kapu Mahas had left their duties and engaged in a silent protest in front of the entrance gate of the Saman Devalaya located near the Ratnapura-Panadura road.
Officials of the temple have explained that their protest has been raised due to the failure to appoint a qualified person as the acting Basnayake Nilame according to tradition.
The appointment of a Basnayake Nilame to the Saman Devalaya is governed by the Buddhist Temples Ordinance, and the appointed Basnayake Nilame is required to perform two basic duties
These duties are those prescribed by the Ordinance and are based on the rituals performed in honor of the temple.
Gayan Wijeyanarayana, the Chief Kapu Maha of the Sabaragamuwa Maha Saman Devalaya, stated that he is protesting against breaking the long-standing traditions maintained by the temple.

හිටපු බස්නායක නිළමේවරයාගේ ධුර කාලය අවසන් වීමත් සමඟ ස්ථීර බස්නායක නිළමේවරයකු පත් කරනතුරු සේවය කිරීම සඳහා වැඩබලන බස්නායක නිළමේවරයා ලෙස එස්.වී චන්ද්‍රසිංහ බෞද්ධ කටයුතු කොමසාරිස් ජනරාල්වරයා විසින් පසුගිය සතියේ පත් කරනු ලැබීය.
සබරගමුව මහ සමන් දේවාලයේ සාම්ප්‍රදායික චාරිත්‍ර වාරිත්‍රවලට නොගැළපෙන මෙම පත්කිරීම දේශපාලන අරමුණක් මත සිදුවූවක් බව ඊයේ දිනයේ සේවයෙන් ඉවත් වූ පිරිස පවසා තිබේ.
ඊයේ පෙරවරුවේ ප්‍රධාන කපු මහතා ඇතුළු සෙසු කපු මහතුන් සිය රාජකාරීවලින් ඉවත්ව රත්නපුර – පානදුර මාර්ගය අසල පිහිටි සමන් දේවාල පිවිසුම් දොරටුව අභියස නිහඩ විරෝධතාවක ද නිරත වී තිබිණි.
සම්ප්‍රදායට අනුව වැඩබලන බස්නායක නිළමේවරයා ලෙස සුදුසුකම් ලත් අයෙකු පත් නොකිරීම හේතුවෙන් තම විරෝධය එල්ල වී ඇති බව දේවාලයේ නිලධාරීන් පැහැදිලි කර තිබේ.
සමන් දේවාලයට බස්නායක නිළමේවරයකු පත් කිරීම බෞද්ධ විහාරස්ථාන ආඥාපනත මගින් පාලනය වන අතර, පත් කරන ලද බස්නායක නිළමේ විසින් මූලික රාජකාරි දෙකක් ඉටු කිරීමට අවශ්‍ය වේ
එම රාජකාරි වන්නේ ආඥාපනත මගින් නියම කර ඇති සහ දේවාලයේ ගෞරවය පිණිස සිදු කරන චාරිත්‍ර වාරිත්‍ර පදනම් කරගත් ඒවාය.
සබරගමුව මහ සමන් දේවාලයේ ප්‍රධාන කපු මහතා වන ගයාන් විජයනාරායන ප්‍රකාශ කළේ දේවාලය විසින් පවත්වාගෙන යනු ලබන දීර්ඝ කාලීන සම්ප්‍රදායන් කඩ කිරීමට තම විරෝධය පළ කරන බවයි
