President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has drawn attention to increasing the Mahapola scholarship provided to university students to Rs. 10,000.
The President drew attention to this issue during a discussion held with the Ministry of Finance.
The University Grants Commission had proposed to increase the Mahapola scholarship to Rs. ten thousand a few months ago. However, the Cabinet approval for this had not been received.
Attention has been focused on increasing the Mahapola scholarship, which is currently Rs. five thousand, to Rs. seven thousand, five hundred. Currently, about three hundred million rupees are spent annually to provide Mahapola scholarships, and an additional amount of about two hundred million rupees has to be allocated to increase the scholarship to Rs. seven thousand, five hundred.
The University Grants Commission has sent the documents related to the payment of Mahapola allowances to first-year students who have been studying for about a year to the Mahapola Trust Fund, but payments have not yet begun. Some universities have already received the names of students eligible to receive the allowances.

විශ්ව විද්යාල සිසුන්ට ලබාදෙන මහපොළ ශිෂ්යාධාරය රුපියල් 10,000 දක්වා ඉහළ නැංවීමට ජනාධිපති අනුර කුමාර දිසානායකගේ අවධානය යොමුවී තිබේ.
මුදල් අමාත්යාංශය සමග පැවති සාකච්ඡාවකදී ජනාධිපතිවරයා මේ පිළිබද අවධානය යොමු කර ඇත.
මහපොළ ශිෂ්යාධාරය රුපියල් දස දහසක් දක්වා ඉහළ නැංවීම සදහා විශ්ව විද්යාල ප්රතිපාදන කොමිෂන් සභාව මීට මාස කිහිපයකට පෙර යෝජනා කර තිබුණි. එහෙත් ඒ සදහා කැබිනට් මණ්ඩල අනුමැතියක් හිමිව තිබුණේ නැත.
මේ වන විට රුපියල් පන්දහසක් වන මහපොළ ශිෂ්යාධාරය රුපියල් හත්දහස් පන්සියය දක්වා ඉහළ නැංවීමට අවධානය යොමු කර ඇත. දැනට මහපොළ ශිෂ්යාධාර ලබාදීම සදහා වාර්ශිකව රුපියල් කෝටි තුන්සියකක් පමණ වැය වන අතර ශිෂ්යාධාරය රුපියල් හත්දහස් පන්සියය දක්වා ඉහළ නැංවීමේදී අමතර රුපියල් කෝටි දෙසීයක පමණ මුදලක් වෙන් කිරීමට සිදුව තිබේ.
මේ වන විට වසරක පමණ කාලයක් අධ්යයන කටයුතු කරන පළමු වසර සිසුන්ගේ මහපොළ දීමනා ගෙවීමට අදාළ ලේඛන විශ්වවිද්යාල ප්රතිපාදන කොමිෂන් සභාවෙන් මහපොළ භාරකාර අරමුදලට යවා තිබෙන නමුත් මෙතෙක් ගෙවීම් ආරම්භ කර නැත. දීමනා ලබා ගැනීමට සුදුසුකම් ඇති සිසුන්ගේ නාමලේඛන ඇතැම් විශ්වවිද්යාලවලට මේ වන විට ලැබී තිබේ.
