With a large number of government holidays, as well as the delay in the start of the first term of schools, the annual school attendance requirement of 210 days for students in government schools, government-approved private schools and Pirivenas has been reduced to 181 days in the new year 2025.
The Ministry of Education said that the school year for 2025 will technically start on January 27, as the first three weeks of school will be held from January 2 to 24 to complete the third term for the 2024 academic year.
In addition, out of the 26 public holidays for 2025, only four fall on weekends, with all the others falling on weekdays.
The Ministry states that therefore, it is not possible to hold classes for 210 days and has granted permission to limit school days to 181 for 2025.

රජයේ නිවාඩු දින විශාල සංඛ්යාවක් මෙන්ම, පාසල්වල පළමු වාරය ආරම්භ කිරීම ප්රමාද වීමත් සමඟ රජයේ පාසල්, රජයේ අනුමත පෞද්ගලික පාසල් සහ පිරිවෙන්වල සිසුන්ගේ වාර්ෂික පාසල් අධ්යාපනය සඳහා පැමිණීමේ දින 210ක අවශ්යතාවය 2025 නව වසරේදී දී දින 181 දක්වා අඩු කර ඇත.
2024 අධ්යයන වර්ෂය සඳහා තුන්වන වාරය සම්පූර්ණ කිරීම සඳහා ජනවාරි 2 සිට 24 දක්වා පළමු සති තුන පාසල් පැවැත්වෙන බැවින්, 2025 සඳහා වන පාසල් වර්ෂය තාක්ෂණික වශයෙන් ජනවාරි 27 වන දින ආරම්භ වන බව අධ්යාපන අමාත්යාංශය පවසයි.
මීට අමතරව, 2025 සඳහා වන රජයේ නිවාඩු දින 26 න් සති අන්තයේ ඇත්තේ හතරක් පමණක් වන අතර, අනෙක් සියල්ල සතියේ දිනවලට යෙදී ඇත.
එබැවින් දින 210 ක් පන්ති පැවැත්වීමට නොහැකි බවත්, 2025 සඳහා පාසල් දින 181කට සීමා කිරීමට අවසර දුන් බවත් අමාත්යංශය පවසයි.
