The government has not yet taken a decision on the new taxes that may be imposed on imported vehicles, says Cabinet Spokesperson Nalinda Jayatissa.
Addressing a media briefing, he said that the Ministry of Finance will issue an official statement in this regard soon.
This statement was made amid increased interest from vehicle importers following the government’s decision to remove restrictions on the import of private vehicles.
Importers have requested the government to allow the import of hybrid vehicles up to seven years old from Japan to meet market demand.
However, Minister Jayatissa clarified that the proposal was not discussed at the recent Cabinet meeting.
He also noted that such proposals can only be considered if a formal proposal is submitted by the Ministry of Finance after discussions with vehicle importers.
The lifting of vehicle import restrictions has sparked widespread debate, with questions about the affordability of vehicles and the implications of imposing new taxes dominating discussions.

පුද්ගලික වාහන ආනයනය සඳහා පනවා තිබූ සීමා ඉවත් කිරීමට රජය ගත් තීරණයෙන් පසු වාහන ආනයනකරුවන්ගේ උනන්දුව ඉහළ යාම මධ්යයේ මෙම ප්රකාශය සිදු විය.
වෙළඳපල ඉල්ලුමට සරිලන පරිදි ජපානයෙන් වසර හතක් දක්වා පැරණි හයිබ්රිඩ් වාහන ආනයනය කිරීමට අවසර දෙන ලෙස ආනයනකරුවන් රජයෙන් ඉල්ලා ඇත.
කෙසේ වෙතත්, අමාත්ය මණ්ඩලය පසුගියදා රැස්වූ අවස්ථාවේදී එම යෝජනාව පිළිබඳව සාකච්ඡා නොකළ බව අමාත්ය ජයතිස්ස පැහැදිලි කළා.
වාහන ආනයනකරුවන් සමඟ සාකච්ඡා කර මුදල් අමාත්යාංශයෙන් විධිමත් යෝජනාවක් ඉදිරිපත් කරන්නේ නම් පමණක් එවැනි යෝජනා සලකා බැලිය හැකි බවද ඔහු සඳහන් කළේය.
වාහන ආනයන සීමා ඉවත් කිරීම පුළුල් විවාදයකට තුඩු දී ඇති අතර, වාහනවල දැරිය හැකි මිල පිළිබඳ ප්රශ්න සහ නව බදු පැනවීමේ ඇඟවුම් සාකච්ඡා ආධිපත්යය දරයි.
