Jagath Wickramaratne, a National People’s Power MP, was elected as the new Speaker of the 10th Parliament.
This was during the parliamentary session held today (17).
The proposal for the new Speaker was moved by Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya and was seconded by the Leader of the House Bimal Ratnayake.
The Speaker’s post had been vacant after the resignation of Mr. Ashoka Rangwala, who was elected as the Speaker of the 10th Parliament.
Meanwhile, the party had announced that it would also nominate a Speaker from the Samagi Jana Balawegaya.
However, they took steps not to propose a name for a Speaker during the parliamentary session held today.

10 වන පාර්ලිමේන්තුවේ නව කථානායකවරයා ලෙස ජාතික ජනබලවේගයේ පාර්ලිමේන්තු මන්ත්රී ජගත් වික්රමරත්න. මහතා තේරී පත්විය.
ඒ අද (17) පැවැති පාර්ලිමේන්තු සභාවාරයේදීය.
නව කථානායකවරයා වෙනුවෙන් වූ යෝජනාව අග්රාමාත්ය හරිනි අමරසූරිය විසින් ගෙන ආ අතර සභා නායක බිමල් රත්නායක විසින් විසින් එය ස්ථීර කරනු ලැබීය.
10 වන පාර්ලිමේන්තුවේ කථානායකවරයා ලෙස තේරී පත්වූ අශෝක රංවල මහතා එම ධුරයෙන් ඉල්ලා අස්වීමෙන් පසු කථානායක ධුරය පුරප්පාඩු ව තිබුණි.
මේ අතර සමගි ජන බලවේගයෙන්ද කථානායකවරයෙකු ඉදිරිපත් කරන බවට එම පක්ෂය ප්රකාශ කර තිබුණි.
නමුත් අද පැවැති පාර්ලිමේන්තු සභාවාරයේදී කථානායකවරයෙකු සඳහා නමක් යෝජනා නොකිරීමට ඔවුන් පියවර ගත්තේය.
