The Supreme Court has ruled that the arrest and detention of former Western Province Governor Asad Salli in 2021 under the Prevention of Terrorism Act was illegal.
The court also ordered the defendant to pay a compensation of Rs. 75,000.
The respondents include former Public Security Minister Sarath Weerasekara and the then Director of the Criminal Investigation Department.
Asad Salli was arrested on March 16, 2021, under the Prevention of Terrorism Act after a statement he made at a press conference on March 9, 2021 was deemed to be ‘inciting discord between religious groups’.
He was acquitted of all charges filed against him by the Colombo High Court on December 2, 2021, after being detained for nearly nine months.

බස්නාහිර පළාත් හිටපු ආණ්ඩුකාර අසාද් සාලි ත්රස්තවාදය වැළැක්වීමේ පනත යටතේ 2021 දී අත්අඩංගුවට ගෙන රඳවා තබා ගැනීම නීති විරෝධී බව ශ්රේෂ්ඨාධිකරණය තීන්දු කර තිබේ.
විත්තිකරුට රුපියල් 75,000ක වන්දියක් ගෙවන ලෙස ද අධිකරණය නියෝග කළේය.
වගඋත්තරකරුවන් ලෙස හිටපු මහජන ආරක්ෂක ඇමැති සරත් වීරසේකර සහ එවක අපරාධ පරීක්ෂණ දෙපාර්තමේන්තුවේ අධ්යක්ෂවරයා ද ඇතුළත් වේ.
අසාද් සාලි 2021 මාර්තු 16 වැනි දින, ත්රස්තවාදය වැළැක්වීමේ පනත යටතේ අත්අඩංගුවට ගනු ලැබුවේ, 2021 මාර්තු 9 වැනි දින ජනමාධ්ය හමුවකදී ඔහු කළ ප්රකාශයක් ‘ආගමික කණ්ඩායම් අතර ආරවුල් ඇති කරන’බවට සැලකීමෙන් පසුවය.
මාස නවයකට ආසන්න කාලයක් රඳවා තබා ගැනීමෙන් පසු 2021 දෙසැම්බර් 2 වැනි දින ඔහුට එරෙහිව ගොනු කරන ලද සියලුම චෝදනාවලින් කොළඹ මහාධිකරණය විසින් ඔහු නිදොස් කොට නිදහස් කරන ලදී.
