It is said that this election will be conducted by the Local Government Commissioner.
Those eligible for the post of Mayor and Deputy Mayor have to be selected by a vote, as no single party has obtained more than fifty percent of the votes.
Accordingly, in the election conducted by the Local Government Commissioner, the candidate from the government or the opposition who obtains more than 50 percent of the votes has the possibility of becoming the mayor.
In the last local government election, the number of members elected to the Colombo Municipal Council from the National People’s Force was 48.
The opposition, including the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, has 69 members elected to the council, and thus the opposition has the largest number of members in the Colombo Municipal Council.
Meanwhile, the ruling party and the opposition are engaged in a fierce competition to take control of the Colombo Municipal Council.
Commenting on the control of the Colombo Municipal Council, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya Colombo District Parliamentarian, Mujibur Rahuman, stated that the opposition has the right to take control since it has the majority of members.
He also pointed out that although the National Jana Balawegaya won 48 members, they failed to cross the fifty percent mark.
Commenting on the control of the Colombo Municipal Council, Deputy Minister and Attorney-at-Law Sunil Watagala said that since the National Jana Balawegaya has won the most members as a single party, his party has the greater right to establish control.
He also says that steps are being taken to establish a governing authority.

මෙම ඡන්ද විමසීම පවත්වනු ලබන්නේ පළාත් පාලන කොමසාරිස්වරයා විසින් බවයි පැවසෙන්නේ.
පුරපති ධූරය සහ නියෝජ්ය පුරපති ධූරයට සුදුසු අය ඡන්දයකින් තෝරා ගැනීමට සිදුව ඇත්තේ කිසිම තනි පක්ෂයක් සියයකට පනහකට වඩා ඡන්ද ප්රතිශතයක් ලබාගෙන නැහැ.
මේ අනුව පළාත් පාලන කොමසාරිස්වරයා පවත්වන ඡන්ද විමසීමේදී සියයට50 කට වැඩි ඡන්ද ප්රතිශතයක් ලබාගන්නා ආණ්ඩුවේ හෝ විපක්ෂයේ අපේක්ෂකයාට නගරාධිපතිවරයා වීමේ හැකියාව පවතිනවා.
පසුගිය පළාත් පාලන මැතිවරණයේදී කොළඹ මහනගර සභාවට ජාතික ජන බලවේගයෙන් තේරී පත් වූ මන්ත්රීවරුන් සංඛ්යාව 48ක්.
සමගි ජන බලවේගය ඇතුළු විපක්ෂයෙන් එම සභාවට සභිකයෝ 69 දෙනෙක් තේරී පත්ව සිටින අතර මේ අනුව කොළඹ නගර සභාවට වැඩි සභිකයන් සංඛ්යාවක් සිටින්නේ විපක්ෂයේයි.
මේ අතර කොළඹ නගර සභාවේ පාලන බලය ගැනීමට ආණ්ඩු පක්ෂයත් විපක්ෂයත් දැඩි තරගයක නිරතව සිටීනවා.
කොළඹ මහ නගර සභාවේ පාලන බලය සම්බන්ධයෙන් අදහස් දක්වන සමග ජන බලවේගයේ කොළඹ දිස්ත්රික් පාර්ලිමේන්තු මන්ත්රී මුජිබර් රහුමාන් මහතා ප්රකාශ කරන්නේ සභිකයන් බහුතරය ඇති හෙයින් පාලන බලය ලබා ගැනීමට අයිතිය ඇත්තේ විපක්ෂයට බවයි.
ජාතික ජන බලවේගය සභිකයන් 48 දෙනෙකු දිනා ගත්තද සියයට පනහ සීමාව ඉක්මවීමට ඔවුන් අපොහොසත් වූ බවද හෙතෙම පෙන්වා දුන්නා.
කොළඹ මහ නගර සභාවේ පාලන බලය සම්බන්ධයෙන් අදහස් දක්වන නියෝජ්ය අමාත්ය නීතිඥ සුනිල් වටගල මහතා පවසන්නේ තනි පක්ෂයක් හැටියට වැඩිම සභිකයන් දිනාගෙන ඇත්තේ ජාතික ජන බලවේගය හෙයින් පාලන බලය පිහිටුවීමට වැඩි අයිතිය ඇත්තේ තම පක්ෂයට බවයි.
පාලන බලය අනිවාර්යයෙන්ම පිහිටුවීමට කටයුතු කරගෙන යන බවද ඔහු පවසනවා.
