A Sri Lanka Transport Board bus traveling from Kataragama to Kurunegala overturned into a ravine in the Garandiella area of Kotmale, resulting in the death of more than twenty-two people, while the remaining injured have been admitted to hospitals in Nuwara Eliya, Gampola, Kotmale and Nawalapitiya for treatment.
The President’s Fund has decided to provide one million rupees each to all those who lost their lives in this accident, and the Minister stated that the insurance company that insured this bus will intervene to promptly provide the insurance compensation due to all the deceased and injured passengers on the bus.
The Minister said that when attention is paid to the tragedy that occurred in the Kotmale Garandiella area and the recent road accidents, a serious discussion has arisen in society regarding passenger safety and traffic discipline, and that certain problematic situations and obstacles arise there, and that it is necessary to act on this matter regardless of them.
The Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation, Mr. Bimal Ratnayake, visited the accident site that evening and the area with the Prime Minister and Deputy Minister Prasanna Kumara Gunasena to inquire about the health facilities of the passengers injured in the accident, and also engaged in close discussions with the accident victims. He also instructed the relevant departments to continuously investigate all the facilities required for them.
A group of officials, including the Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways, the Deputy Minister of Health and the Speaker, attended the scene of the accident early in the morning and are still intervening in the matter of the deceased and injured, and in providing the necessary health facilities to the injured.

කතරගම සිට කුරුණෑගල දක්වා ගමන් කරමින් තිබූ ශ්රී ලංකා ගමනාගමන මණ්ඩලයට අයත් බස් රථයක් කොත්මලේ ගැරඬිඇල්ල ප්රදේශයේ දී ප්රපාතයකට පෙරළී යාම නිසා සිදු වූ අනතුරින් විසි දෙදෙනෙකුට අධික දිවි අහිමි වී ඇති අතර සෙසු තුවාලකරුවන් ප්රතිකාර සඳහා නුවරඑළිය, ගම්පොළ, කොත්මලේ සහ නාවලපිටිය යන රෝහල්වලට ඇතුළත් කර තිබේ.
මෙම අනතුරෙන් දිවි අහිමි වූ සියලු දෙනාට ජනාධිපති අරමුදල මඟින් එක් අයෙකුට රුපියල් මිලියනයක් බැගින් වූ මුදලක් ලබා දීමට තීරණය කර ඇති අතර මෙම බස් රථය රක්ෂණය කර ඇති රක්ෂණ සමාගමෙන් බස් රථයේ ගමන් ගත් මියගිය සහ තුවාල ලැබූ සියලු දෙනාට හිමි විය යුතු රක්ෂණ වන්දි කඩිනමින් ලබා දීම සඳහා මැදිහත් වන බවද අමාත්යවරයා සඳහන් කළේය.
කොත්මලේ ගැරඬිඇල්ල ප්රදේශයේදී සිදු වූ ඛේදවාචකය මෙන්ම මෑත කාලීනව සිදු වූ රිය අනතුරු ගැන අවධානය යොමු කරන විට මගී ආරක්ෂාව සහ රථවාහන විනය සම්බන්ධයෙන් බරපතළ සාකච්ඡාවක් සමාජය තුළ මතුව ඇති බවත් එහිදී යම් යම් ගැටලුකාරී තත්ත්වයන් හා බාධාවන් මතු වන බවත් කී ඇමැතිවරයා ඒවා නොසලකා මේ සම්බන්ධයෙන් ක්රියා කිරීමට අවශ්ය බවත් ප්රකාශ කළේය.
ප්රවාහන මහාමාර්ග වරාය හා සිවිල් ගුවන් සේවා අමාත්ය බිමල් රත්නායක මහතා එදින ම සවස එම අනතුර සිදු වූ ස්ථානයටත්, එම අනතුරින් තුවාල ලැබූ මගීන්ගේ සෞඛ්ය පහසුකම් පිළිබඳව සොයා බැලීමටත් අගමැතිනිය සහ නියෝජ්ය අමාත්ය ප්රසන්න කුමාර ගුණසේන මහතා සමඟ එම ප්රදේශයට ගිය අතර අනතුරට ලක් වූවන් සමඟ සමීප කතා බහකද නිරත විය. එමෙන් ම ඒ අයට අවශ්ය සියලු පහසුකම් සොයාබැලීම් ද නොකඩවා කරන ලෙස අදාළ අංශවලට උපදෙස් දුන්නේය.
