President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has posted a post on his official X account, congratulating Pope Robert Provost of the United States, who was elected as the new Pope yesterday (08) afternoon at the Vatican.
It reads, “Your role carries great responsibility and I wish you strength to guide the people of Laos through it. May your leadership bring hope and inspiration to people around the world.”
Meanwhile, the new Pope has been named Pope Leo 14 upon his inauguration.
Pope Leo, who is 69 years old, is the 267th Pope in the world.
He also made history as the first Pope elected from the United States.
After the ascension of His Holiness Pope Francis, the need to elect a new pope arose for the 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide, and the process was carried out in the Sistine Chapel of the Vatican with the participation of 133 cardinals from around the world.

එහි දැක්වෙන්නේ, “ඔබ වහන්සේගේ භූමිකාව විශාල වගකීමක් දරන අතර ඒ හරහා ලෝවාසී ජනතාවට මඟ පෙන්වීමට ශක්තිය ප්රාර්ථනා කරමි. ඔබගේ නායකත්වය ලොව පුරා සිටින ජනතාවට බලාපොරොත්තුවක් සහ ආශ්වාදය ගෙන එනු ලැබේවා.” යනුවෙනි.
මේ අතර අභිනව පාප් වහන්සේ ධුරයට පත් වීමෙන් අනතුරුව 14වන ලියෝ පාප්වහන්සේ ලෙස නම්කර තිබේ.
69වන වියේ පසුවන ලියෝ පාප් වහන්සේ ලොව 267වන පාප් වහන්සේය.
එමෙන්ම උන් වහන්සේ අමෙරිකාවෙන් තේරීපත් වූ පළමු පාප් වහන්සේ ලෙසින් ද ඉතිහාසයට එක්වුණි.
ශුද්ධෝත්තම ෆ්රැන්සිස් පාප් වහන්සේ ස්වර්ගස්ථ වීමෙන් පසු ලොව පුරා බිලියන 1.4ක් වූ කතෝලික ජනයා වෙනුවෙන් නව පාප් වහන්සේ තෝරා පත් කරගැනීමේ අවශ්යතාව පැන නැඟුණ අතර ලොව පුරා සිටින කාදිනල්වරු 133 දෙනෙකුගේ සහභාගීත්වයෙන් වතිකානයේ සිස්ටීන් දේවස්ථානයේදී එම කටයුතු සිදු කෙරුණි.
