Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya yesterday (May 05) met with Charles Whiteley, Head of the South Asia Division of the European External Action Service, as part of the GSP+ monitoring mission.
The Prime Minister welcomed the EU delegation and reaffirmed Sri Lanka’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with the EU, particularly through the GSP+ framework.
The discussions focused on key government priorities including poverty alleviation, digital transformation and the “Clean Sri Lanka” campaign.
During the discussions, the Prime Minister highlighted the government’s continued efforts to establish reconciliation and highlighted the ongoing legislative reforms including the enactment of legislation to combat drug trafficking, human trafficking and the Online Safety Act.
The EU delegation welcomed Sri Lanka’s new policies, particularly those that are consistent with the core objectives of the GSP+ mechanism.
They provided guidance on the process of re-application for GSP+ concessions and reiterated their willingness to support Sri Lanka’s formal development efforts.
The dialogue further discussed the importance of the IMF’s engagement and increasing women’s political and economic participation.
The Prime Minister stressed the need to improve support systems such as childcare, eldercare and transportation to include more women in the workforce.
The EU Ambassador to Sri Lanka, H.E. Carmen Moreno, stated at the meeting that the EU is focused on enhancing relations with Sri Lanka through economic, cultural and tourism sectors.
Senior officials from both sides, including the Prime Minister’s Secretary Pradeep Saputhanthri, Additional Secretary to the Prime Minister Sagarika Bogahawatte, and the Director General of the European and North American Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sugeeshwara Gunaratne, participated in the meeting.

අග්රාමාත්ය ආචාර්ය හරිනි අමරසූරිය ඊයේ (මැයි 05) GSP+ අධීක්ෂණ මෙහෙයුමේ කොටසක් ලෙස, යුරෝපීය බාහිර ක්රියාකාරී සේවයේ දකුණු ආසියානු අංශයේ ප්රධානී චාල්ස් වයිට්ලි මහතා හමුවුණා.
එහිදී අග්රාමාත්යවරිය යුරෝපා සංගම් නියෝජිත පිරිස පිළිගත් අතර, විශේෂයෙන් GSP+ රාමුව හරහා යුරෝපා සංගමය සමඟ හවුල්කාරිත්වය ශක්තිමත් කිරීමට ශ්රී ලංකාවේ කැපවීම තහවුරු කළා.
දරිද්රතාවය පිටුදැකීම, ඩිජිටල් පරිවර්තනය සහ “Clean Sri Lanka” මෙහෙයුම ඇතුළු රජයේ ප්රධාන ප්රමුඛතා පිළිබඳ මෙම සාකච්ඡාවේදී අවධානය යොමුව තිබෙනවා.
සාකච්ඡාවේදී අග්රාමාත්යවරිය සංහිඳියාව ස්ථාපිත කිරීම සඳහා රජයේ අඛණ්ඩ උත්සාහය පිළිබඳව විශේෂයෙන් අවධාරණය කර තිබූ අතර මත්ද්රව්ය ජාවාරම, මිනිස් ජාවාරමට එරෙහිව සටන් කිරීම සඳහා නීති සම්පාදනය කිරීම සහ මාර්ගගත ආරක්ෂණ පනත ඇතුළු වත්මන් නීති ප්රතිසංස්කරණ පිළිබඳව ද අවදානය යොමු කෙරිණ.
ශ්රී ලංකාවේ නව ප්රතිපත්ති, විශේෂයෙන් GSP+ යාන්ත්රණයේ මූලික අරමුණු සමඟ අනුකූල වන ඒවා හඳුන්වා දීම යුරෝපා සංගම් නියෝජිත පිරිසගේ ප්රසාදයට හේතුවීම විශේෂය.
ඔවුන් GSP+ සහන සඳහා නැවත අයදුම් කිරීමේ ක්රියාවලිය පිළිබඳ මග පෙන්වීමක් ලබා දුන් අතර ශ්රී ලංකාවේ විධිමත් සංවර්ධන ක්රියාවලින් සඳහා සහාය දැක්වීමට ඇති කැමැත්ත නැවත අවධාරණය කළහ.
මෙම සංවාදයේදී IMF හි සහභාගීත්වය සහ කාන්තා දේශපාලන හා ආර්ථික සහභාගීත්වය වැඩි කිරීමේ වැදගත්කම පිළිබඳව තවදුරටත් සාකච්ඡා කරන ලදී.
ශ්රම බලකායට වැඩි කාන්තා පිරිසක් ඇතුළත් කර ගැනීම සඳහා ළමාරක්ෂක සේවා, වැඩිහිටි සත්කාර සහ ප්රවාහනය වැනි ආධාරක පද්ධති වැඩිදියුණු කිරීමේ අවශ්යතාවය අග්රාමාත්යවරිය මෙහිදී අවධාරණය කළාය.
ආර්ථික, සංස්කෘතික සහ සංචාරක අංශ හරහා ශ්රී ලංකාව සමඟ සබඳතා වැඩිදියුණු කිරීම සඳහා යුරෝපා සංගමයේ අවදානය යොමුව ඇති බව ශ්රී ලංකාවේ යුරෝපා සංගමයේ තානාපති අතිගරු කාමන් මොරේනෝ මහතා මෙම හමුවේදී සඳහන් කලේය.
