The smallest man killed on May Day was Mul Oya Govindan, the biggest was President Ranasinghe Premadasa!

Vidath Samaranayake

While workers in London started the May Day celebration since 1890, the first May Day rally in Sri Lanka was held in 1933 under the leadership of A.E. Gunasinghe, the founder of the Sri Lanka Workers’ Party. The rally started from Galle Face in Colombo and proceeded to Victoria (Vihara Maha Devi) where the meeting was held. Its slogan was “Let’s be Rajapaksas”.

On May 1, 1934, five left-wing labor unions held a meeting in Colombo, and on May Day in 1935, they marched from Price Park to Price Park. One of the main slogans was “Down with the British Empire!” It is considered the first Labor Day slogan against imperialism.

By this time, various trade unions had formed in Sri Lanka, and they tried to win their demands by launching strikes and struggles. The printers’ strike, the carters’ strike, and the textile mills’ strike are some of the famous strikes.

The first worker to die from police gunfire is Govindan, an estate worker. That was on January 12, 1940, during the Mulooya Estate Workers’ Battle. Thus, the Sri Lankan labor movement has come forward to this day in the face of various strikes and suppression struggles.

Special events in the history of May Day

Giving importance to May Day, it was the Mahajana Eksath Peramuna government led by Prime Minister S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike that first declared it a public holiday in the country in 1956. The proposal was submitted by former Labor Minister T. B. Ilangaratne.

For the first time in the history of the country, a May Day celebration was not held in 1971. This was due to the crisis situation in the country due to the April uprising in 1971.

In April 1987, May Day celebrations were banned due to several incidents, including a bomb attack by the LTTE organization. There were requests to postpone the May Day celebrations until May 22. However, the Motherland Protection Movement decided to break the government’s ban on May Day and hold a May Day rally and parade. Accordingly, a student of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Kithsiri Mevan Ranawaka, and a worker, Anandalal Kiribathgoda, were killed in a police firing incident on a protest march held after the May Day celebration held at the Narahenpita Abhayaramaya.

Former President R. Premadasa was killed in an LTTE suicide bomb attack on the United National Party’s May Day rally held in 1993 at Armour Street.

A request was made to all political parties not to hold May Day demonstrations in 2006 due to threats from the LTTE. However, the Lanka Sama Samaja Party held a rally and was attacked by the police.

In 2018, the May Day celebration was held on May 7 instead of May 1 because Vesak Poya fell on April 29 that year.

In 2019, May Day rallies and meetings were not held that year due to the Easter attacks on April 21.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it was decided not to hold May Day rallies and meetings in the country in 2020 and 2021.
