It was reported that a commotion broke out when prison officials tried to transfer an inmate to another location.
In response to the transfer, a group of inmates in one of the ward areas began to protest and behave uneasily.
As a result, prison officials had to fire warning shots into the air to restore peace.
The Prisons Department said that investigations into the incident are ongoing.
Meanwhile, following the unrest at Matara Prison, the Police Special Task Force (STF) has been deployed to ensure security outside the prison.

බන්ධනාගාර නිලධාරීන් රැඳවියෙකු වෙනත් ස්ථානයකට මාරු කිරීමට උත්සාහ කළ විට කලබලයක් ඇති වූ බව වාර්තා විය.
මෙම මාරුකිරීමට ප්රතිචාර වශයෙන්, එක් වාට්ටුවක රැඳවියන් පිරිසක් විරෝධතා දැක්වීමට පටන්ගෙන ඇති අතර නොසන්සුන් ලෙස හැසිරී තිබේ.
එහි ප්රතිඵලයක් ලෙස, සාමය යථා තත්ත්වයට පත්කිරීම සඳහා බන්ධනාගාර නිලධාරීන්ට අහසට අනතුරු ඇඟවීමේ වෙඩි තැබීමට සිදුව ඇත.
