According to government sources, the current acting IGP Priyantha Weerasuriya will be appointed as the new IGP of Sri Lanka
Accordingly, Priyantha Weerasuriya will be sworn in as the 37th IGP.
However, media reports indicate that even though there are already seven candidates for the IGP position, the current acting IGP will be appointed as the new IGP, according to government sources.
Priyantha Weerasuriya was appointed as the acting IGP after Deshabandu Tennakoon was suspended from performing his duties as IGP by the Supreme Court.
A motion signed by 115 members of the National People’s Force to remove Deshabandhu Tennakoon from the post of IGP was recently submitted to Parliament and it has already been stated that the motion will be passed in Parliament on April 8th or 9th with the support of opposition members by the largest number of votes in history.
Once the motion is passed, Deshabandhu Tennakoon will be removed from the post of IGP and Priyantha Weerasuriya will be appointed as the new IGP.
