A pregnant young woman who tried to commit suicide by jumping into the Bentota River on International Women’s Day today (08) was rescued by the intervention of a police sergeant, the Aluthgama Police say.
The pregnant woman, unable to bear the harassment from her husband due to a quarrel she had with him, had come to Aluthgama town from Walathara in Beruwala Police Division today and had walked to the Bentota Bridge and attempted to commit suicide by jumping into the river.
The police say that the loss of life was prevented due to the police checkpoint established by the Aluthgama Police near the Bentota Bridge at that time.
The police have taken action and with the help of the neighbors, have taken steps to rescue her in a way that does not endanger her life.
Aluthgama Police intervened and brought the mother of the eight-month pregnant young woman to the Aluthgama Police Station and instructed her to hand over her pregnant daughter to them and take care of her, said Aluthgama Police OIC Chief Inspector Ramesh Ratnasinghe.
Police Sergeant Dharmasena (34484) Mahatha attached to the Aluthgama Police Station saved her life.

ජාත්යන්තර කාන්තා දිනය යෙදුණු අද(08) බෙන්තොට ගඟට පැන දිවි හානිකර ගැනිමට ගිය ගැබිණි තරුණ කාන්තාවක් පොලිස් සැරයන්වරයෙකු මැදිහත් වීමෙන් ඉන් මුදවා ගත් බව අලුත්ගම පොලිසිය කියයි.
මෙම ගැබිණි කාන්තාව සිය ස්වාමියා සමග ඇතිකරගත් අඬදබරයක් හේතුවෙන් ස්වාමියාගෙන් වෙන පීඩාවන් ඉවසා දරා ගැනීමට නොහැකිව මෙසේ බෙන්තොට ගඟට පැන දිවි හානි කරගැනීමට බේරුවල පොලිස් වසමේ වලතර ප්රදේශයේ සිට අද අලුත්ගම නගරයට පැමිණ පාගමනින් බෙන්තොට පාලම අසලට ගමන් කර ගඟට පැන සිය දිවි හානිකර ගැනීමට තැත් කර ඇත.
එම අවස්ථාවේ බෙන්තොට පාලම අසල අලුත්ගම පොලිසිය මගින් ස්ථාපිත කර තිබූ පොලිස් මුර පොළ නිසා මෙම ජීවිත හානිය වැළකුණු බව පොලිසිය කියයි.
පොලිසිය ක්රියාත්මකව අසල්වාසීන්ගේ ද සහය ඇතුව ඇයගෙ දිවියට හානි නොවන අයුරින් බේරා ගැනීමට කටයුතු කර තිබේ.
අලුත්ගම පොලිසිය මැදිහත්ව අට මසක් වන ගැබිණි තරුණ කතගේ මව අලුත්ගම පොලිසියට ගෙන්වා ඇයට සිය ගැබිණි දියණිය භාරදී රැකබලා ගන්නා ලෙස දැනුම් දුන් බව අලුත්ගම පොලිස් ස්ථානාධිපති ප්රධාන පොලිස් පරීක්ෂක රමේෂ් රත්නසිංහ මහතා පැවසීය.
ඇයගේ දිවි බේරා ගැනීමට කටයුතු කළේ අලුත්ගම පොලිසියට අනුයුක්තව කටයුතු කරන පොලිස් සැරයන් ධර්මසේන(34484) මහාතා විසිනි.
