Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe has said that he denies the allegations against him that he prevented former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa from being brought to justice.
It is reported that during the discussion, moderated by Al Jazeera journalist Medhi Hassan, Ranil Wickremesinghe has threatened to leave the venue after only 8 minutes of the discussion due to a heated situation.
It is reported that Ranil Wickremesinghe has also said that he denies the allegations that his government failed to properly investigate the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings and the possible links of government officials to them.
When asked if he helped Gotabaya Rajapaksa avoid prosecution, Ranil Wickremesinghe had clarified that the relevant legal decisions are made by the Attorney General, not politicians. Commenting on the decision to allow ousted former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to return to Sri Lanka in 2022, he had said that he had no right to prevent it since Gotabaya Rajapaksa was not legally charged.
Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe has also said that he is not a dictatorial leader enough to prevent such a thing.
During this discussion, he was asked about the allegations made by the Catholic Church that the Ranil Wickremesinghe-led government tried to protect certain forces involved in the Easter bombings, and Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe had rejected the allegations, stating that they were absurd allegations and that the allegations were being driven by the politics of the Catholic Church.
The journalist also questioned Ranil Wickremesinghe regarding the Special Presidential Commission of Inquiry report, which revealed that the detention and torture of young men in a housing complex in the Batalanda area in the late 1980s took place with the consent of then-government minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
The interview took a very heated turn at that time and Ranil Wickremesinghe denied all the allegations.
Although Ranil Wickremesinghe initially denied the existence of a Special Presidential Commission of Inquiry report on the Batalanda killings, the Al Jazeera journalist had come to the discussion with the relevant report in hand.
Ranil Wickremesinghe then questioned the validity of the report, saying that it had never been discussed in Parliament.

ගෝඨාභය රාජපක්ෂට නඩු පැවරීමෙන් වැළකී සිටීමට උදව් කළේ දැයි විමසූ විට, අදාළ නීතිමය තීරණ ගනු ලබන්නේ දේශපාලනඥයන් නොව නීතිපතිවරයා බවද රනිල් වික්රමසිංහ පැහැදිලි කර තිබූ අතර 2022 වසරේදී දී පළවා හරින ලද හිටපු ජනාධිපති ගෝඨාභය රාජපක්ෂට නැවත ශ්රී ලංකාවට පැමිණීමට අවසර දීමේ තීරණය සම්බන්ධයෙන් අදහස් දක්වමින් ඔහු පවසා තිබුණේ, නෛතික වශයෙන් ගෝඨාභය රාජපක්ෂට චෝදනා නොතිබූ හෙයින් එය වැළැක්වීමට තමාය අයිතියක් නොමැති බවයි.
එවැනි දෙයක් වැළැක්වීමට තරම් තමා එකාධිපති නායකයෙක් නොවන බවද රනිල් වික්රමසිංහ මහතා පවසා තිබෙනවා.
මෙම සාකච්ඡාව අතරතුර, පාස්කු බෝම්බ ප්රහාරයට සම්බන්ධ ඇතැම් බලවේග ආරක්ෂා කිරීමට රනිල් වික්රමසිංහ ප්රමුඛ රජය උත්සාහ ගත් බවට කතෝලික පල්ලියෙන් එල්ල වන චෝදනා සම්බන්ධයෙන් විමසා ඇති අතර එම චෝදනා රනිල් වික්රමසිංහ මහතා ප්රතික්ෂේප කර තිබුණේ, ඒවා විකාරසහගත චෝදනා බවත් එම චෝදනා කතෝලික පල්ලියේ දේශපාලනය විසින් මෙහෙයවන බවත් සඳහන් කරමින්.
එමෙන්ම 1980 දශකයේ අගභාගයේදී බටලන්ද ප්රදේශයේ නිවාස සංකීර්ණයක් තුළ තරුණයින් රඳවා ගනිමින් වධ හිංසාවට කිරීම සිදු වූයේ එවකට රජයේ අමාත්යවරයෙකු වූ රනිල් වික්රමසිංහ මහතාගේ අනුදැනුමෙන් යුතුව බවට කරුණු හෙළිදරව් කරනු ලැබු විශේෂ ජනාධිපති පරීක්ෂණ කොමිසම් සභා වාර්තාව සම්බන්ධයෙන්ද මෙහිදී මාධ්යවේදියා රනිල් වික්රමසිංහගෙන් කරුණු විමසීමක් සිදු කර තිබුණා.
එම අවස්ථාවේදී සම්මුඛ සාකච්ඡාව ඉතා උණුසුම් ස්වරූපයක් ගෙන ඇති අතර රනිල් වික්රමසිංහ මහතා එම චෝදනා සියල්ල ප්රතික්ෂේප කරන බව පවසා තිබෙනවා.
පළමුව රනිල් වික්රමසිංහ මහතා බටලන්ද ඝාතන සම්බන්ධයෙන් විශේෂ ජනාධිපති පරීක්ෂණ කොමිසම් සභා වාර්තාවක් ඇති බව නොපිළිගන්නා බව පැවසූවත් අල්ජසීරා මාධ්යවේදීයා එම සාකච්ඡාවට පැමිණ තිබුණේ අදාළ වාර්තාවද අතැතිවයි.
අනතුරුව රනිල් වික්රමසිංහ එම වාර්තාවේ වලංගුභාවය ප්රශ්න කර ඇති අතර ඔහු පවසා ඇත්තේ, එය කිසි විටෙකත් පාර්ලිමේන්තුවේ සාකච්ඡාවට ලක් කර නොමැති බවයි.
