A nine-year-old girl who was hospitalized after being shot in the Magulagama area of Hettipola last night has died, police say.
The girl and her grandmother were admitted to the Kuliyapitiya Hospital with gunshot wounds, where the girl died.
The injured woman is still receiving treatment.
According to investigations, at the time of the shooting, a group of people were shouting loudly to hunt wild boars, and the girl and her grandmother came out of the house upon hearing the noise.
The police have recovered a 12-bore firearm used in the shooting, but the suspect has fled the area.
Hettipola police are continuing their investigations to find the suspect.

පරීක්ෂණවලට අනුව, වෙඩි තැබීම සිදුවන අවස්ථාවේ, වල්ඌරන් දඩයම් කිරීම සඳහා පිරිසක් ශබ්ද නඟා කෑගසමින් සිට ඇති අතර, එම හඬ ඇසී දැරිය සහ ඇගේ මිත්තණිය නිවසින් පිටතට පැමිණ ඇත.
වෙඩි තැබීමට භාවිත කළ බෝර 12 ගිනි අවියක් පොලිසිය විසින් සොයාගෙන ඇති නමුත් සැකකරු ප්රදේශයෙන් පළාගොස් ඇත.
සැකකරු සොයා හෙට්ටිපොල පොලිසිය පරීක්ෂණ දිගටම කරගෙන යයි.
