Chinese researchers led by virologist Shi Zhengli have discovered a novel coronavirus circulating in bats that poses a risk of animal-to-human transmission, raising concerns about future outbreaks, foreign media reported.
According to the reports, the virus, identified as HKU5-CoV-2, belongs to the Mersovirus subfamily, which includes the MERS virus.
The newly isolated virus can bind to the ACE2 receptor on human cells, which is the same pathway used by the Covid-19 virus, according to a study cited by Reuters news agency.
A study published in the journal Cell showed that HKU5-CoV-2 has been found to infect human cells in laboratory experiments.
There are also concerns about its ability to spread particularly rapidly, the news reports said.
