Information was revealed at the Parliamentary Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) that more than Rs. 180 million allocated for several events and programs of the National Youth Services Council was spent on the campaign activities of candidate Ranil Wickremesinghe during the last presidential election.
It was also revealed at the meeting that these cheques were issued with the signature of the former Chairman of the National Youth Services Council the day before the presidential election.
Youth Services Council officials told the committee that they had certified the expenses because the Chairman had pressured them and that they thought they would be transferred if they did not do so.
COPE Committee Chairman Dr. Nishantha Samaraweera informed the officials to fulfill the duties assigned to them properly.
It was stated that the person who was the Finance Director at that time was present at the committee, but the committee was misled by trying to remain silent while the lower officials presented their views.
The officials of the National Youth Services Council, who further commented on this, pointed out that they had received Rs. 100 million from the Treasury the day before the presidential election.
They also stated that these expenditure certificates had to be issued and cheques had to be issued under the influence of the chairman.

ජනාධිපතිවරණයට පෙර දින ජාතික තරුණ සේවා සභාවේ හිටපු සභාපතිවරයාගේ අත්සන සහිතව මෙම චෙක් පත් නිකුත් කර බවද එහිදී හෙළිවිය.
සභාපතිවරයා බලපෑම් කළ නිසා වියදම් සහතික කළ බවත් එසේ නොකළේ නම් තමන්ට ස්ථාන මාරු ලබාදෙනු ඇතැයි සිතූ බවත් තරුණ සේවා සභාවේ නිලධාරීහු කමිටුව හමුවේ පැවසුහ.
තමන්ට පැවරුණු කාර්යභාරය නිවැරදිව ඉටුකරන ලෙස කෝප් කමිටුවේ සභාපති වෛද්ය නිශාන්ත සමරවීර එහිදී නිලධාරීන්ට දැනුම් දුන්නේය.
එවකට මුදල් අධ්යක්ෂවරයා ලෙස කටයුතු කළ පුද්ගලයා කාරක සභාවට පැමිණ සිටියද පහළ නිලධාරින් අදහස් ඉදිරිපත් කරද්දී නිහඬව සැඟවී සිටීමට උත්සාහ කිරීම කාරක සභාව නොමඟ යැවීමක් බව එහිදී ප්රකාශ විය.
මෙහිදී වැඩිදුරටත් අදහස් දැක්වූ ජාතික තරුණ සේවා සභාවේ නිලධාරීන් පෙන්වා දුන්නේ ජනාධිපතිවරණයට පෙර දින මහා භාණ්ඩාගාරයෙන් රුපියල් කෝටි දහයක් ලැබුණු බවයි.
