India has lodged a strong protest with Sri Lanka after the Sri Lankan Navy was accused of firing on Indian fishermen in the waters off Jaffna.
Reports said two fishermen from Karaikal were injured in the incident.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs has summoned Sri Lanka’s acting High Commissioner in New Delhi and lodged a protest over the firing and detention of Indian fishermen.
Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed the protest at a press conference held over the weekend.
He said that Sri Lankan authorities have detained 13 Indian fishermen, five of whom are injured and two are in critical condition.
“The press release was also issued regarding 13 fishermen who were arrested, 5 of whom were injured. 2 of them were seriously injured. We had to summon the Sri Lankan Acting High Commissioner to Delhi to strongly protest against this. 6 Indian fishermen who were in custody were released earlier and sent to Chennai. 6 Indian fishermen were released the day before yesterday in the midst of the tense situation regarding the Indian fishermen issue,” Jaiswal said.

ඉන්දියාවේ විදේශ කටයුතු අමාත්යාංශය විසින් නවදිල්ලියේ සිටින ශ්රී ලංකා වැඩබලන මහකොමසාරිස්වරයා කැඳවා ඉන්දීය ධීවරයින්ට වෙඩි තැබීම් සහ රඳවා තබා ගැනීමේ සිද්ධීන් සම්බන්ධයෙන් සිය විරෝධය පළකර ඇත.
ඉන්දීය විදේශ කටයුතු අමාත්යංශයේ ප්රකාශක රන්දීර් ජයිශ්වාල් සති අන්තයේ පැවැති ජනමාධ්ය හමුවේදී මෙම විරෝධතාව සනාථ කර තිබේ.

තවද ජනමාධ්ය නිවේදනය නිකුත් කළේ අත්අඩංගුවට ගත් ධීවරයින් 13 දෙනෙකු සම්බන්ධයෙන් වන අතර ඔවුන්ගෙන් 5 දෙනෙකුට ද තුවාල සිදුවුණා. ඔවුන්ගෙන් 2 ක් බරපතල ලෙස තුවාල ලබා තිබෙනවා. ඉන්පසුව ඒ පිළිබඳව දැඩි විරෝධයක් දැක්වීමට ශ්රී ලංකා වැඩබලන මහකොමසාරිස්වරයා දිල්ලියට කැඳවීමට අපට සිදුවුණා. අත්අඩංගුවේ පසුවූ ඉන්දීය ධීවරයින් 6 දෙනෙකු මීට පෙර නිදහස් කර චෙන්නායි වෙත යවා තිබෙනවා. ඉන්දීය ධීවරයින් 6 දෙනෙකු පෙරේදා නිදහස් කර ඇත්තේ ඉන්දීය ධීවර ගැටළුව සම්බන්ධයෙන් පවතින උණුසුම්කාරී වාතාවරණය හමුවේයි.” යනුවෙන් ජයිශ්වාල් සඳහන් කළේය
