The terrifying day when the sound of gunfire broke out in a Tiger position –
*It would not be an exaggeration if someone said that the most horrific period of the brutal war that began in 1983 was the period of 1987-1989. Although various journalists have been reporting on the war in the North and East since then, only the Sri Lanka Television Corporation journalists were able to go to the battlefields in the 80s. It was because of this brutal war that the new newspaper feature called “War Reporting” was introduced into the media.
Since joining the Rupavahini News Department in 1983, I still consider it a great privilege to have been able to go to the North and East to report on the most difficult and horrific situations, because of the wealth of experience I gained through that. I will never forget the experiences I had while participating in the recording of the Thondamanaru Bridge bombing in 1984, the Vadamarachchi operation, the first news report of LTTE leader Prabhakaran in 1987, the Aranthalawa attack, Operation Leap Forward, the capture of the Elephant Pass troops, the Kilinochchi attack, the liberation of Jaffna Fort, the release of Captain Boyagoda, etc. With the arrival of the Indian Peace Keeping Force in 1987, a camera team stayed with me in Jaffna for a while and it was our duty to record the news and send it to Colombo. During this month, we were captured by the LTTE terrorists three times, but we managed to escape by some trick. Once, while our group was swimming in the sea at Keeramele, the LTTE came and tried to kidnap us. Another time, while filming the academic situation at the University of Jaffna, the Tigers came and the television camera was thrown to the ground, and they were saved by the intervention of the then Vice-Chancellor.
On another occasion, our team went to the Nallur temple to film the fast of Thilipan, a strongman of the Tigers. After that, Anton Balasingham, the Chief of the Indian Army in Calcutta, the then Indian Ambassador to this country, K. N. Dixit, the Deputy Leader of the LTTE, severely reprimanded me and ordered his guards to grab me by the ears and throw me out. Knowing that the time had come for me to say goodbye to Jaffna, I returned to Colombo. The next morning, the radio news reported that four TV crew members who were with me had been killed by the Tiger terrorists. That incident will go down in Sri Lankan history as the first group of journalists to be killed by the brutal LTTE terrorists.

*1983 වර්ෂයේ ආරම්භ වූ කුරිරු යුද්ධයේ අති බිහිසුණුම වකවානුව 1987-1989 කාලය යැයි යමෙකු පවසන්නේ නම් එය අතිශෝක්තියක් නොවනු ඇත. විවිධ මාධ්යවේදීහු එදාමෙදා තුරු උතුරු නැගෙනහිර රණබිම් වලට ගොස් යුද්ධය වාර්තා කළද 80 වකවානුවේ රණබිම් වාර්තාකරණයට රූපවාහිනි මාධ්යවේදීන් ලෙස යෑමට හැකිවූයේ ශ්රී ලංකා රූපවාහිනි සංස්ථාවේ ශිල්පීන්ට පමණක්ම විය. “රණබිම වාර්තාකරණය” නමින් අලුතින්ම පුවත්පත් විශේෂාංග මාධ්ය තුළට එක්වූයේද මේ කුරිරු යුද්ධය නිසාමය.
1983 වර්ෂයේදී රූපවාහිනී ප්රවෘත්ති අංශයට එක්වීමෙන් පසු වැඩිම වාර ගණනක් මෙන්ම කටුක සහ අතිබිහිසුණු අවස්ථාවන් වාර්තාකරණය සදහා උතුරු නැගෙනහිර ප්රදේශවලට යෑමට හැකිවීම මා ලද විශාල භාග්යයක් ලෙස අදටත් මා සලකන්නේ ඒ තුළින් ලැබූ අත්දැකීම් සම්භාරය නිසාමයි. 1984 වර්ෂයේදී තොන්ඩමනාරු පාලම පිපිරවීම , වඩමාරච්චි මෙහෙයුම , 1987 එල්.ටී.ටී.ඊ නායක ප්රභාකරන්ගේ ප්රථම ප්රවෘත්තී වාර්තාකරණය , අරන්තලාව ප්රහාරය , ඉදිරිපිම්ම මෙහෙයුම , අලිමංකඩ හමුදාම නතු කරගැනීම , කිලිනොච්චිය ප්රහාරය , යාපනය කොටුව මුදාගැනීම , කපිතාන් බෝයගොඩ නිදහස්වීම ආදී පටිගත කිරීම් වලට සහභාගී වී මා ලැබූ අත්දැකීම් කිසිදිනෙක මා හට සිතින් ඉවත් කළ නොහැකිය.
1987 ඉන්දීය සාම සාධක හමුදාවේ පැමිණීමත් සමගම මා සමග කැමරා කණ්ඩායමක් කාලයක් යාපනයේ රැදෙමින් එහි සිදුවන දෑ ප්රවෘත්ති වලට නගා කොළඹට එවීම අපගේ රාජකාරිය විය. මෙම මාසයක කාලයේදී තුන්වතාවක්ම කොටි ත්රස්තයන්ගේ ග්රහණයට අප අසුවුවද කුමක් හෝ උපක්රමයකින් බේරීමට අපට හැකිවිය. වරක් අප කණ්ඩායම කීරමලෙහී මුහුදේ නාමින් සිටියදී කොටි පැමිණ අප පැහැරගෙන යෑමට උත්සාහ කළේය. තවත් වරෙක යාපන සරසවියේ අධ්යයන තත්ත්වය රූපගත කරද්දී කොටින් පැමිණ රූපවාහිනී කැමරාව පොළොවේ ගසස්ස සැරසුන මොහොතේ එවකට සිටි උපකුලපතිගේ මැදිහත්වීමෙන් දිවිගලවා ගත්හ.
තවත් අවස්ථාවක කොටින්ගේ ප්රබලයෙකු වූ තිලිපන්ගේ උපවාසය රූපගත කිරීමට අප කණ්ඩායම නල්ලූර් කෝවිලට ගියහ. ඉන් අනතුරුව ඇන්ටන් බාලසිංහම් , ඉන්දීය යුද හමුදා ප්රධානී කල්කට්, එවකට මෙරට සිටි ඉන්දීය තානාපති කේ. එන්. ඩික්සිත් එල්.ටී.ටී.ඊ නියෝජ්ය නායක මහත්තයා දැඩි ලෙස මා හට දෝශ දර්ශනය කර මා කනින් අල්ලා එළියට දමන ලෙස ඔහුගේ ආරක්ෂකයන්ට දැක්වීය. මා හට යාපනයෙන් සමුගන්න කාලය උදා වී ඇති බව දැනගත් මා හට යාපනයෙන් සමුගන්න කාලය උදා වී ඇති බව දැනගත් මා කොළඹට පැමිණියෙමි. ඊට පසුදින පෙ.ව. ගුවන් විදුලි ප්රවෘත්ති තුළින් කියැවුණේ මා සමග සිටි රූපවාහිනි සමාජිකයින් සිව් දෙනෙකු කොටි ත්රස්තවාදීන් අතින් මරුමුවට පත්ව ඇති බවය. ලංකා ඉතිහාසයේ ඒ සිදුවීම සටහන් වනුයේ රුදුරු කොටි ත්රස්තවාදීන් අතින් මරුමුවට පත් වූ ප්රථම මාධ්යවේදීන් පිරිස ලෙසය.
