Following the local government elections held on May 6, a gazette notification has been issued announcing that the inaugural meeting of the newly elected Colombo Municipal Council will be held on June 16.
The relevant gazette notification has been issued by the Western Local Government Commissioner, Ms. Sarangika Kalhari Jayasundara.
Accordingly, the inaugural meeting of the Colombo Municipal Council is scheduled to begin at 9.30 am on June 16.
The first order of business at the meeting to be held at the City Hall will be to elect the new Mayor and Deputy Mayor.
While no party received an absolute majority after the local government elections, both the Jathika Jana Balawegaya and the Samagi Jana Balawegaya have announced that they have sought the support of other political groups to elect a Mayor.
Meanwhile, according to the gazette issued by the Commissioner of the Western Local Government Department, the inaugural meeting of 20 more local government bodies is also scheduled to begin in June.

මැයි 6 වන දින පළාත් පාලන මැතිවරණය පැවැත්වීමෙන් පසු, අලුතින් තේරී පත් වූ කොළඹ මහ නගර සභාවේ මංගල රැස්වීම එළැඹෙන ජූනි මස 16 වන දින පැවැත්වෙන බවට නිවේදනය කරමින් ඊට අදාළ ගැසට් නිවේදනය නිකුත් කර තිබේ.
බස්නාහිර පළාත් පාලන කොමසාරිස් සාරංගිකා කල්හාරි ජයසුන්දර මහත්මිය විසින් අදාළ ගැසට් නිවේදනය නිකුත් කර ඇත.
ඒ අනුව ජුනි 16 වන දින උදෑසන 9.30 කොළඹ මහ නගර සභාවේ මංගල රැස්වීම ආරම්භ වීමට නියමිතය.
නගර ශාලාවේ පැවැත්වීමට නියමිත රැස්වීමේදී, නව නගරාධිපති සහ නියෝජ්ය නගරාධිපතිවරයා තෝරා පත් කර ගැනීම පළමු කාර්යය ලෙස සිදුවනු ඇත.
පළාත් පාලන මැතිවරණය පැවැත්වීමෙන් පසු කිසිදු පක්ෂයකට පූර්ණ බහුතරයක් නොලැබුණු අතර, ජාතික ජන බලවේගය සහ සමගි ජන බලවේගය යන පක්ෂ දෙකම නිවේදනය කර ඇත්තේ නගරාධිපතිවරයෙකු තෝරා පත් කර ගැනීම සඳහා අනෙකුත් දේශපාලන කණ්ඩායම්වල සහාය ලබාගෙන ඇති බවය.
මේ අතර, බස්නාහිර පළාත් පාලන දෙපාර්තමේන්තුවේ කොමසාරිස්වරයා විසින් නිකුත් කරන ලද ගැසට් පත්රයට අනුව, තවත් පළාත් පාලන ආයතන 20ක මංගල රැස්වීම ද ජුනි මාසයේදී ආරම්භ වීමට නියමිතය.
