The Secretary of the Sri Lanka Teachers’ Union, Joseph Starling, says that this year’s budget has not paid attention to the report of the Welfare Committee regarding the increase in teacher principal salaries.
He said this at a media briefing held in Colombo.
He further said that this year’s budget had expected an increase in the salaries of teachers, principals and other public servants, and that teachers and principals had waged a great struggle to remove the teacher salary discrepancy.
Although steps were taken in 2022 to provide 1/3 of the relevant salary discrepancy, it was provided according to the Welfare Committee report, and he also stated that a huge struggle was waged against the Ranil Rajapaksa government last year to obtain the remaining 2/3.
He said that there is no mention of the Subodhani Committee report in this year’s budget, which is a serious issue, and that although the Prime Minister stated that the principal service is in seventh place and the teacher service is in eighth place according to the salary structure, it is incorrect information, and that the teacher service is in 12th place according to the salary structure.
He also said that the salary structure of special grade nurses, the upper class of the management service and the police, who were below the teacher grade, has increased after 1997.
The Secretary said that since there are 30,000 vacancies in the teaching service, steps should be taken to fill the teacher vacancies, and that the money provided for the maintenance of schools is not sufficient.
He also said that no steps have been taken so far to remove the 18 percent VAT levied on school children’s equipment.

අදාළ වැටුප් විෂමතාවයෙන් 1/3 ක් ලබාදීමට 2022 වසරේදී කටයුතු කළද එය ලබා දුන්නේද සුබෝධනී කමිටු වාර්තාවට අනුව බවත්,ඉතිරි 2/3 ක ලබා ගැනීම සඳහා රනිල් රාජපක්ෂ ආණ්ඩුවට එරෙහිව ඉකුත් වසරේදී දැවැන්ත අරගලයක් සිදුකළ බවද ඔහු සඳහන් කළේය.
මෙවර අයවැය තුළ සුබෝධනී කමිටු වාර්තාව සම්බන්ධව කිසිදු සඳහනක් නොමැති බවත්,එය බරපතළ ප්රශ්නයක් බවත්,වැටුප් ව්යුහ අනුව විදුහල්පති සේවාව හත්වැනි ස්ථානයේද,ගුරු සේවාව අටවැනි ස්ථානයේද පවතින බව අගමැතිවරිය ප්රකාශ කළද එය වැරැදි තොරතුරක් බවත්,වැටුප් ව්යුහය අනුව ගුරු සේවාව පවතින්නේ 12 වැනි ස්ථානයේ බවද ඔහු කියා සිටියේය.
ගුරු ශ්රේණියට පහළින් සිටි විශේෂ ශ්රේණියේ හෙදියන්,කළමනාකරණ සේවයේ අධි පන්තිය සහ පොලිසියේ,වැටුප් ව්යුහ 1997 වසරින් පසු ඉහළට ගොස් තිබෙන බවද ඔහු පැවසීය.
ගුරු සේවයේ පුරප්පාඩු 30,000 ක් පවතින බැවින් ගුරු පුරප්පාඩු සපුරාලීමට කටයුතු කළයුතු බවත්, පාසල්වල නඩත්තු සඳහා ලබාදෙන මුදල් ප්රමාණවත් නොවන බවද ලේකම්වරයා කියා සිටියේය.
පාසල් දරුවන්ගේ උපකරණ සඳහා අය කරන සියයට 18 ක වැට් බද්ද ඉවත් කිරීමට මෙතෙක් කටයුතු කර නැතැයිද ඔහු කියා සිටියේය.
