He entered politics in 1992 under President D. B. Wijetunga. He was never a leader who was arrogant with his power and position and was someone who humbly resolved any problem that came to him. He was never a racist and always acted on that basis, recognizing that all sections of the people in this country have equal rights. It must be said that the way he took the social development shortcomings and problems of the people not only in the Udunuwara electorate but also throughout the Kandy district to the President, Prime Minister and Ministers to find solutions to them is commendable. During his political journey from the time he first entered politics from the Central Provincial Council to Parliament, as well as during his various ministerial positions, many benefits were developed for the progress of society and the development of the country due to the decisions taken by the people of the country, and the people who mourn his passing reflect on this as a matter of respect for him. He always stated that political power exists only as long as the people have the will, and he is known among the people as a politician who acted with great patience both in gaining power and in relinquishing power. I think of him as a leader who dealt well with the way in which several governments in power lost power and in some cases gained power, and who never allowed his opponents to harass him or his party members to take advantage of his power. This is a tribute to my friend, the hardworking politician Lucky Jayewardene.

He died on the night of 07/01/2025 while being admitted to the Kandy General Hospital due to a sudden heart attack.
He was 71 years old at the time of his death.
Former President D.B. With the blessings of Mr. Wijetunga, he entered politics from the Udunuwara seat in Kandy and was elected to the first Provincial Council of the Central Province in 1988.
He was then elected to the Provincial Council for the second time in 1993 and also served as the Minister of Transport, Highways, Power and Energy.
Lucky Jayawardena contested the 1994 general election from the Udunuwara seat and became a Member of Parliament for the first time.
He was then re-elected to Parliament in 2001 and also held the position of Non-Cabinet Minister of Lands and Land Titles.
He was then elected to the Central Provincial Council from 2004 to 2015 and served as the Chief Organizer of the Opposition.
He was again elected as a Member of Parliament in the 2015 General Election. He served as the State Minister of Urban Planning, Water Supply and Higher Education in the Good Governance Government and also served as a Cabinet Minister in 2019.
He is the father of two sons and his wife is a teacher (retired) Achala Wijayathunga Jayawardena.
His eldest son, Attorney-at-Law Madhava Jayawardena, also contested this year’s General Election (SJB) while his younger son Shamal Jayawardena is a civil engineer.
Arrangements have been made to bury his body at his residence at No. 506, Galgediyawa, Gampola, and the last rites are scheduled to be performed at the Mahaiyawa Crematorium in Kandy on the 11th.

1992 වර්ෂයේ දී ඩී. බී. විජේතුංග ජනාධිපති තුමාගේ ඇසුරේ දේශපාලනයේ නිරත වූ එතුමා කිසි විටෙක තම බලයෙන් නිලයෙන් හිස උදුම්මවාගත් නායකයෙකු නොවූ අතර තමන් වෙත එන ජනතාවගේ ඕනෑම ගැටළුවක් නිහතමානිව විසදා දීමට කටයුතු කළ අයෙක් බව සහිපත් කරමි.කිසි විටෙක ජාතිවාදී නොවූ එතුමා මේ රටේ සියලු ජන කොටස් වලට එක හා සමාන අයිතියක් ඇතිබව පිළිගෙන ඒ මත පිහිටා හැම විටම කටයුතු කළේය. උඩුනුවර ආසනයේ පමණක් නොව මහනුවර දිස්ත්රික්කය පුරා විසිරි සිටින ජනතාවගේ සමාජ සංවර්ධන අඩුපාඩු හා ගැටළු ජනාධිපති අගමැති මැති ඇමතිවරුන් වෙත රැගෙන ගිය එතුමා ඒවාට විසදුම් ලබා ගැනීමට කටයුතු කල ආකාරය ප්රසන්ශනිය බව කිව යුතුය.එතුමා මුලින්ම මධ්යම පළාත් සභාවෙන් දේශපාලනයට අවතීර්ණ වන සමයේ සිටම පාර්ලිමේන්තුව දක්වා ගිය දේශපාලන ගමන් මග තුල මෙන්ම ඉන් පසුව විවිධ ඇමති ධුර දරන අවධීන් වලදී සමාජයේ ප්රගමනය වෙනුවෙන් හා රටේ සංවර්ධනය වෙනුවෙන් ගනු ලැබූ තීන්දු තීරණ හේතුවෙන් රටේ ජනතාවගේ පසහසුකම් රැසක් සංවර්ධනය වූ අතර එතුමාගේ අභාවය වෙනුවෙන් ශෝක වන ජනතාව ඒ පිලිබදව මෙනෙහි කරන්නේ එතුමාට ගෞරවයක් වශයෙනි.දේශපාලන බලය පවතින්නේ ජනතාවගේ කැමැත්ත ඇති තෙක් පමණක් බව හැම විටම ප්රකාශ කල එතුමා බලය ලබා ගැනීම මෙන්ම බලය අත් හැරීම යන කාරණා දෙකෙහිදීම මනා ඉවසීමෙන් කටයුතු කල දේශපාලඥයෙකු ලෙස ජනතාව අතර ප්රකටය. බලයේ සිටි ආණ්ඩු ගණනාවක් බලයෙන් පැරදෙන ආකාරයත් ඇතැම් අවස්ථාවල බලය ලබා ගන්නා ආකාරයත් සමග මැනවින් කටයුතු කල එතුමා ඒ කිසිදු අවස්ථාවක තම ප්රතිවාදීන්ට හිරිහැර වීමටත් තම පාක්ෂිකයින්ට බලයෙන් යුතු ප්රයෝජන ගැනීමටත් ඉඩ ලබා නොදුන් නායකයෙකු බව මා මෙනෙහි කරන්නේ මගේ මිත්ත්ර ලකී ජයවර්ධන නම් කෘතහස්ත දේශපාලඥයාට ගෞරවයක් වශයෙනි.

ඉන්පසු 93 වසරේදී දෙවන වරටත් පළාත් සභාවට තේරිපත් වූ ඒ මහතා එහි ප්රවාහන මහ මාර්ග විදුලි බල හා බලශක්ති අමාත්යවරයා ලෙසටද කටයුතු කලේය
1994 වසරේදී පැවැත් වූ මහ මැතිවරණයට උඩුනුවර ආසනයෙන් තරග කළ ලකී ජයවර්ධන මහතා මුල් වරට පාර්ලිමේන්තු මන්ත්රීවරයකු ලෙස පත්විය.
ඉන් පසු 2001 වසරේදී නැවත පාර්ලිමේන්තුවට තේරී පත්වූ ඒ මහතා එහිදී ඉඩම් හා ඉඩම් හිමිකම් පිළිබඳ කැබිනට් නොවන අමාත්ය ධුරයද හෙබවිය.
ඉන්පසු 2004 සිට 2015 දක්වා මධ්යම පළාත් සභාවට තේරී පත් වී එහි විපක්ෂයේ ප්රධාන සංවිධායක ලෙසත් කටයුතු කලේය
නැවතත් 2015 මහ මැතිවරණයේදී පාර්ලිමේන්තු මන්ත්රීවරයකු ලෙස පත්විය යහ පාලන ආණ්ඩුවේ නගර සැලසුම් ජල සම්පාදන හා උසස් අධ්යාපන රාජ්ය අමාත්යවරයා ලෙස කටයුතු කල අතර 2019 දි කැබිනට් අමාත්යවරයා වශයේන්ද කටයුතු කලේය
පුතුන් දෙදෙනෙකුගේ පියෙකු වන ඒ මහතාගේ බිරිඳ ගුරුවරියක වන (විශ්රාමලත්) අචලා විජයතුංග ජයවර්ධනය.
නීතිඥ මාධව ජයවර්ධන නමැති ඔහුගේ වැඩිමහල් පුතුද මෙවර මහ මැතිවරණයට (සජබ) තරග කළ අතර බාල පුතු ශාමල් ජයවර්ධන සිවිල් ඉංජිනේරුවරයෙකි.
ඒ මහතාගේ දේහය ගම්පොළ ගල්ගෙඩියාව අංක 506 නිවසේ තැන්පත් කිරීමට කටයුතු සුදානම් කර ඇති අතර අවසන් කටයුතු එළඹෙන 11 දින මහනුවර මහයියාව ආදාහනාගාරයේදී සිදු කිරීමට නියමිතය.
