The Alcohol and Drug Information Center says that cigarette sales in the country have decreased by 50% in the past 10 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accordingly, although about 4,800 million cigarettes were sold annually 10 years ago, only about 2,200 million cigarettes are sold annually, its Executive Director Sampath De Seram stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, he stated that due to the tax policy being decided in a way that was beneficial to the tobacco company, the tobacco company’s profits have increased by 400% – 500%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also stated that about 100 billion rupees have been lost due to incorrect tax determination in the past 5-6 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, Sampath de Seram further stated that although there is a perception that cigarette tax accounts for 6% and alcohol tax for 9% of the total tax revenue, the salaries of government employees are paid using these taxes, this is false.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
