Of this, 2.9 million metric tons of rice is produced. One-fourth of the country\u2019s rice production is \u2018unripe rice\u2019. 85% of the paddy in the southern province is unripe. Accordingly, \u2018there was a minimum production of over 7 lakh tonnes of paddy rice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On two occasions, 54,000 tonnes of paddy rice were distributed to 2.7 million families at 20 kg each. Of this, about 75% was paddy rice and the rest was white paddy. Even if it is assumed that 50,000 kg of paddy rice was distributed free of charge by the government, it is 14% of the total paddy rice production in the country (a certain amount of white rice was also distributed).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">22% of the rice consumption in our country is paddy and 18% is white paddy.. When 54,000 tonnes of paddy rice is distributed to the poorest section of the society from a harvest of over one million tonnes, there is no way that there will be a shortage of paddy rice. This statement is a lie deliberately fabricated by the government to escape its responsibility to provide food to the poorest people of society based on future needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The decision to distribute rice was a collective decision to which Parliament also contributed. Based on a proposal I submitted to the \u2018Parliamentarians\u2019 Forum for Children\u2019, a report was prepared using experts on child malnutrition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It shows that 36% of the children in this country are malnourished to some degree. The need to provide midday meals to school children and food to extremely poor families has been pointed out by the same reports, many other studies, and international organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">President Ranil Wickremesinghe implemented the rice distribution through the state machinery, considering the recommendation of a parliamentary committee and the national interest. It is a collective responsibility of Parliament and the executive to fulfill their responsibilities on behalf of the people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the first time in Sri Lankan history, raw rice was not available for the Thai Pongal festival, but the rice shortage was caused by the government&#8217;s inability to manage the market. The &#8216;Food Policy Committee&#8217; has not met even once since the current government came to power. This clearly shows the priority the government gives to taking policy decisions regarding the country&#8217;s food needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rice crisis escalated because the country&#8217;s ministries and departments, instead of presenting a single scientific solution, went to the media to fan the flames. There is no point in ignoring the timely and optimal steps taken by the parliamentary committees and the cabinet to meet the country&#8217;s nutritional needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
